Round 9 vs. Warriors Discussion + Voting

Yeah I agree with you completely Dragon. Especially about Wallace. He has experience and also solid defense. I think he just needs to stop bombing for Reed EVERYTIME. It works every now and then, but cmon!

The second YY went down I knew our Nightmare on Wing St had begun. Beale will practice and learn to catch bombs. Otherwise send him to Kogorah early!

A disappointing loss, but not a crucial one. At home next week vs Manly I want to see a huge turnaround!

Hard game to vote for, might have to watch it again without facepalm-a-vision but all in all I'm satisfied with the effort.

Beale is an easy target and while it's an issue he needs to address (he's attempting to catch the kicks around his torso instead of his chest) I don't think it's the reason we lost the game. Our work around the ruck and our last tackle options is what really hurt us in the end. Despite being given every opportunity to come back into the game we just played some silly attacking football, which hurt our momentum and made it difficult for our make-shift halves pairing to come up with the right play at the right time.

Make no mistake about it though, Kiwis were on last night, particularly in that first half that was played almost like an Origin match by them. Every bounce went their way and they received a couple of questionable home town decisions that influenced the scoreboard.

Honestly it's difficult to think of my votes. I thought there were a about 6-8 players worthy but I'll go with...

3. Josh Hoffman - A constant menace at the back busting through tackles, getting inbetween defenders and ensuring we got our sets off to the best way possible despite the swarming defence.
2. Alex Glenn - Like Hoffman, a constant handful down his fringe, scored a nice try weaving through traffic and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty.
1. Ben Te'o - Came on and played like it was his last game from the club. Great stuff and almost turned the game on it's head with his couple of charges.

Unlucky - Reed, Hodges, Macca, Parker & McGuire.

Oh and don't even get me started with the Kiwi coverage. If I hear Mateo called Martel one more time I'm going to scream. Pissed me off within the first 5 minutes when they refused to show us how the Kiwis earned three goes to finally crack our defensive line. Instead, just showing us Reed's challenge on Maloney.

That was the most one sided coverage and commentary Ive ever seen in an NRL game

Good game of football - and the stats were very even too. Games between us are usually tough and that was no exception. It was our best game of the year and we needed it.

BTW our hooker Friend played 75 minutes with a broken jaw.

I look forward to our next encounter.

Looking at the stats, things weren't all that bad. We actually made a couple more metres (2!), missed less tackles (47-29) and made more line breaks (4-3).

I think what killed us was the quick play the balls they kept getting. We lost that stat 44 to a mere 13. That shouldn't happen. Whereas slow PTBs we "won" 42-19.

That and all round ball handling need to be addressed IMO.

Hunt was absolutely awful, except in the play where he set up Thaiday for his try,

While I'll admit that he wasn't as good as he was against the Raiders, he was far from awful.

He takes on the line, has speed and agility and has more creativity in his little finger than Peter Wallace has in his entire body.

When it comes to Wallace vs. Hunt, reality could punch you in the face, and you would still have no clue...

and yet according to you Hunt was awful "except in the play where he set up Thaiday for his try" ........

which actually added a little respectability to the end score line.

Did we miss Wallace against the Raiders....no.

Did we miss him last night......IMO, no. The end result would have been the same.

The Warriors simply out muscled us in defence.

I'm going to stop short on saying what I really think but suffice to say, I've got no problems with Hunt filling in for Wallace at the moment.

Considering how crap our 5th tackle options consistently were, I can't see how you can say we didn't miss him.
Compare the first 30 with the last 50 in that department.

It's been at least slightly better when Wallace was on the field compared to last night.

Even if you do believe that Hunt is better than Wallace, replacing him mid game is far from ideal.

We definitely missed Wallace out there, if nothing more for his organisation to build a set.

However to say Hunt was awful is incredibly unfair. He didn't have a great game or anything but he had enough good touches on him to make sure it wasn't bad.

What shouldn't be forgotten about Wallace's injury is that it also impacted on Macca's game that suffered when he couldn't come off mid-way through the second half. We lost our way when he hurt his ankle and that's what cost us in the end.

Yes......I will concede this.

Another concession from me would be if nothing else, Wallace takes some of the pressure off Corey Norman. So maybe I've over stated Peter's absence being a non-event....... a little

......maybe.

Norman was MIA a lot when the side needed him last night.

Agreed......which is what I've failed to understand in AUD's earlier post

and to touch on nat's earlier comment about not being an ideal situation re: Hunt coming on for Wallace, IMO if Hunt had of known he was starting the game, trained there all week ....been prepared ( ala Raiders game), THAT could have been the difference as well.

As it was, the Warriors were up in our faces....aggressively (legal) and put a huge amount of pressure on our attack. The team as a whole were a little unsettled by this.

Hunt was good, I thought. Yes we needed someone to demand the ball on the fifth tackle, which when Hunt and Norman paired together last time was Norman but I think Norman just was in the mode of being the second half and Hunt should have demanded the ball on the fifth more often. Disappointed with some of the Ref decisions but I am not going to blame them for our loss.

3. Hoffman - constant menace in attack and some good last line defence.
2. Macca did a lot of defensive works had a few brain snaps kicking on the fifth.
1. Reed thought this was close to Reed's best game of the season made a lot of good runs when were on the back foot.

Other thoughts - Thaiday had his best game as captain, got stuck in bringing it out from our half and didn't let a few big hits get him down. Te'o was great off the bench offered a lift in defence and some bustling runs. Not sure why we played the last ten or so minutes with our three props on the bench, if they were stuffed okay but if they still had some hit ups in them they should of been on. We got afraid of taking it up the middle, and that lost us the game. If we had taken it up the middle more they wouldn't have made such easy ground in return.

Mate if Wallace had played like Hunt did in that second half, you would be tearing shreds off him.

Watch the Canberra game again, it is Norman that really steps up - Hunt was goodish but his short kicking game was pretty weak. Hunt's most impressive part of the raiders game was his defence held up when it was the part people though would crumble - Norman relished with the chance to step up and i wish he would do the same while Wallace was on the field.

They clearly missed Wallace out there and whatever glasses your watching Hunt through, you need to get them fixed if you think he is a better option than Wallace at halfback.

I'm not having a go at Hunt, he is a solid little player that has moments of brilliance, but his is not a top level NRL halfback.

I don't like the Sky coverage any more than you do - but had to pull you up on this point. They aren't saying Martel, they are pronouncing his surname the traditional / correct (Tongan) way. Think along the lines of Mah-tayo.

There were instances where it was just sounded like Martel.

I actually like that they try and use traditional pronunciations but they got lazy at times for mine.

If anyone has an issue with a name being pronounced correctly then get over it. Society has been lazy in the past now it's time to get the basics right, starting with saying the name right. On the game the poor officiating had nothing to do with the end result in this one. A determined team andstrong pack lead by Big Ben was the very reason we won it. Always good games versus broncos there will be more great battles no doubt.
