Rugby 7s for 2016 Olympics

With the inclusion of Rugby 7s for 2016 Olympics are we likely to see any of our exciting and fast players moving over to Union to go for Olympic Gold? What's the story with Rugby 7s? Is it exclusively union, or can they draw from both League and Union players for 7s?

Pretty sure you've got to be an amateur to play Sevens. I might be wrong, but if that's the case, I doubt anyone would be jumping at the chance to possibly play amateur rugby

Olympic Gold's Olympic Gold. For players who have achieved it all in NRL with plenty of coin might be interested. How old would Benji be in 2016?

I've heard the whole Olympic is for amateur athletes, but how does that line up with Basketball? It's full of NBA players.

It's 2012 champ not 1960. Professionals have been in the Olympics for years, I'm just saying I'm pretty sure most Rugby Sevens tournaments are restricted to amateurs

NZ normally stack our team with a few All Blacks when the commonwealth games 7s comes around, expect the same to happen in 2016

The Pros v Amateurs debate depends on each sport's ruling body. I'm pretty sure the only sports with complete amateurism still are boxing and wrestling. Everything else it doesn't matter.

As I said I wasn't sure, and to be honest who really cares. The lure of the Olympics wouldn't be enough for any rugby league player with at least 1/8th of a brain to piss of to union, but it does have SBW written all over it. But by 2014 he'll be their problem anyway

Not sure why anyone would give a shit about Olympic gold in a sport where it holds no prestige.

People say that about tennis, yet I reckon I've heard Federa holds it as one of his favourite achievements.

It's a little bit bigger than prestige within just rugby league. Let's say you are a top class footballer and you've met a stranger overseas. You strike up a conversation and they ask you what your proudest achievement is. You proudly tell them you won a State of Origin series or the Dally M. 99 times out of 100 they'll stare at you blankly. Tell them you've won Olympic Gold on the otherhand and that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Going a bit off-topic but how is beach volleyball an Olympic sport?

What's next? Marco Polo?
