I reckon if we can get past the union WC in Oz in 2027 without losing too many players then union WC`s in the future will be something that only happen overseas, the Kiwis have already said they will never be able to afford another one. Because of this they will pose less of a threat.

Apparently South Africa have said it is unlikely they will probably never hold another one as well.
Makes me wonder whether in the future we this could work this to Rugby League`s advantage in these Rugby World Cup starved nations; we are Rugby League after all. Might be able to market that.

The only issue maybe is if Australia win. I would severely question that happening considering how crap they are atm.

Won’t matter. Union has slipped too far now to ever be relevant again

their best hope is surviving as a full time sport in Australia

They might get a bounce. Their problem is that the product is completely awful. The only team worth watching in that sport is probably NZ

Yeh a dead cat bounce. The sport is too much of a shambles at club level

who knows how high the nrl salary cap wilL be then. The top nrl players could be on 2 million pa. Even European Union struggles to pay that

I’d love for that to happen. If the pay competes with European rugby we could be the sport for all top line Australia, Pacific and NZ RU/RL talent

Yep the next salary cap increase should see that happen

players have copped a bad deal most of the extra money has gone to clubs not the players

with the 18th team the cap should be 15 million minimum.

There has been some talk that world rugby may abandon Australasia and concentrate on the more lucrative USA market. That and Japan is where the real money is.
No way

they need all the teams from our region

without them their World Cup would be stuffed

Jesus that would be audacious. The chances of Americans taking up new sports and then becoming mainstream would be quite slim and very costly.

The IRB are pretty incompetent. In terms of our region, South Africa committing to six nations and exiting Super Rugby for good would be economically quite challenging.

Personally I don't see the big deal with rugby. It's a complimentary sport and similar skill sets. We need a strong rugby to ward off the AFL. That ship may have sailed, and NRL can survive without it, but makes AFL penetration into the northern states relatively easier.

Speaking of " product is completely awful " flicking over to the union tonight from the election coverage didn`t even know Scheck was playing until the 60th minute, they are using him as a battering ram when they do, what a bloody waste.

You have made a good point in that there has always been a class divide with RU/RL and if their game goes belly up (I don’t think it will ever go belly up per se but it will continue to slide into irrelevance) their support will more likely lean towards fumbleball than us.

One thing I will say though is if we are going to expand, we are going to have to plunder their junior talent a fair bit, as well as expand our junior base of course

Exactly. What a bloody waste. What position was he playing?

Union is a cockroach which needs to be squashed

for many reasons

it’s a shame the arlc hasn’t been more proactive about undermining union. Unions fall from grace has been all self inflicted

literally this thread is an example of union needing to sign league players to get publicity. They can’t get any on their own

league had no problem getting into Melbourne without union

Perth will be the same

Battering ram.
Wouldn`t have a clue.

Two things on that: 1) If we can get teams like the Roosters, who have a pretty clean cut reputation, continuing to push into private schools, then this will us to further tap into their union ( mostly ex-League kids anyway ) players and make League more accepted there;
2) don`t underestimate the disdain a lot of north shore and private school types have for fumbleball either, they`re big-heads and they won`t go for small time parochial Aussie sport like f-ball.

Most union fans in nsw and qld also have league teams. As super rugby has declined they just pay more attention to their league teams. At a guess in Sydney I would say the roosters would be the biggest beneficiaries of this and also manly
