Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

I usually point that out to them in comment sections. If our world cup is so shit and so irrelevant than what are they doing even commenting. They know that if we stop holding ourselves back we can make a semi decent international scene pretty quickly

It's even funnier when you consider the first RU World Cup wasn't until 1987, and the final for it was played at Concord Oval.

The RL World Cup pre-dates the RU one by a few decades.

The 87 Union world cup was played in front of small crowds with massive blow outs and tier 2 teams relying heavily on ex pats and heritage players.....sound familiar?

Look how far they've come in just 40 yrs ! Shows what league can do if it ever got its sh#t in order.

Assuming RA make an offer to Cleary...or one of the games genuine stars, would fans have a problem if the NRL topped up thier salary to match Rugby's offer ??

For example, if Cleay/Walsh/Ponga (or whoever is on Rugby's 'hit list') is paid 1.2m by thier club and Rugby offer them 2m, the NRL could top up thier salary 800k to match RA offer.

I appears that for union to out bid the NRL for stars they would be paying a lot more than they can afford

And without South Africa.

So it's a big * on the ABs claim to that World Cup.

I'd advise any rugby league player thinking of swapping codes to go to a local shopping mall and ask random strangers to name a member of their state Super Rugby team. And then ask them to name a member of the Wallabies. That's how quickly you'll be forgotten.
You'll be a star on the GAGR forum though!

To keep a player of that calibre and star power? No, I wouldn't mind if the NRL intervened. I'm sick of us doing nothing when our players what to go to other codes. Although, you'd have to be careful because player managers will jump all over that to boost the earnings of their players

So not one fullback, winger, centre maybe a half or a breakaway forward from any country is suitable to come across?

Surely one of the better teams has one.

@ALX25, future Storm juniors.

Without looking it up, I believe the Wallabies won the RUWC in 1987 and I think 1991. Back when we were actually decent. In those early years the ABs were considered 'chokers' because they were arguably the best and most consistent team, but then crumbled at the WC.

4 teams have won the RU World Cup and 5 have been in the Final. For such a global game so we are told it’s a tad predictable. Yeah but, what about Rugby league? RL spends the square root of f**k all in promoting the International game to be honest in comparison and isn’t too far behind the above stats. Again, you will NOT see the world playing RU, you will see the same 4 countries in Nov/Dec and they will come to you in June, every 4 years you will put 90 or so past the cannon fodder ( unless you are the wallabies) until you settle down for NZ vs SA in the Final again. More than Rugby League, but we don’t beat our chests about it.

I hate union the way some hate afl on here, but their World Cup psses all over ours in every aspect. We can but dream…..

biggest issue is they have 8 nations that can compete with each other, we have 5 and only recently has that improved from 3.

geting France and png competitive should be RL’s main international priority.
