Roosters becoming a feeder club for Union.

If he goes back to union, which he probably will, that’ll be the 5th player in 2 years the roosters have lost to Union ( Jorgenson, Manu, SuaallI, Fitler Jnr ) and they would have lost Angus Crichton too if Rugby Australia hadn’t botched the deal at the last minute.

Why does this only happen to the Roosters ?
I think the Roosters encourage it. I've heard a few of the defectors make comments like... I never want to play against the Roosters. Ok, where's the line between good for the Roosters vs. good for RL. Seems like the Roosters are getting nice and cozy with Union in that Eastern Suburbs bubble and would rather players go to Union than lose them to a rival NRL club

If he stays long enough in league to become a good player France will offer him 1.5 million plus

His career progression is fast though

It might have more to do with how players feel about the Roosters. Plenty of players have left Australia after playing NRL for one club as they didn't want to play against that club on a regular basis.

Manu was from NZ and always had All Black ambitions, hence why he went to Union. Su'allii? You can pout that more on his manager wanting the $, let alone he;'d played a lot of union before he went fulltime to league. In relation to Mark Nawaqanitawase, he came to the NRL from Union, so he's always going to be a target for union.

Crap on a cruch, because a player doesn't want to play against the Roosters mewans the Roosters are deliberately sending them to union? Gimme a break.

How do you explain Jorgenson and Fitler Jnr ? Both came through the Roosters pathways and took less money to sign with the Waratahs.

Id say it’s more about the Roosters sending players to GPS schools as part of thier recruiting. The roosters aren’t the only club that does this but it has come back to bite them on a few occasions. The roosters currently have 6 players from the Scots College and have recently signed another. These clubs are taking a big risk, letting kids get a taste of Union, see that it’s far less demanding on the body and has opportunities over seas and decide to stay. It’s just happened to the Panthers with future star Lemoto deciding to stay with Rugby after the panthers developed him.

Critchton was asked on 100% Footy if he’s spoken to Manu and if he’s enjoying rugby, he said Manu is loving living in Japan and loving that he only has to make 3 tackles a game. Those are things league can’t offer.

Jorgenson never wanted to go to league

Same with Steve edmeds son

Roosters do have a lot of juniors from private schools though

That’s the thing with Union. If they don’t want to train hard they can get big dollars and have a contiki tour

In relation to Fittler Jr, Brad Fittler wanted Zach to not be in the limelight for being his son (e.g. avoiding any of the types of issues similar to those confronting Kyle Flanagan). As such I think you will find he had more to do with it than the Roosters in any event.

Further, I didn't realise you were a slave for life to one sport if you played it, which is what you make out. It's like the players concerned don't have any say in the matter. That's why I find the suggestion so daft.

What’s the level of NRL coverage like in the UK ? Plenty of insane tries being scored. Been great to watch. Was over there during the ODI cricket World Cup when England beat NZ on a boundary count back. They moved the final to free to air . Media over there got excited but most of the taxi drivers were unaware it was even being played.
Other than a couple of games per week being shown on sky sports, NRL gets pretty much zero coverage - but as it’s an Australian domestic competition, I wouldn’t expect it to get any. However, whilst it’s low attention, it still gets more attention than the A-league, donestic Australian cricket, AFL, Union etc. NRL is definitely the Australian domestic competition that gets the most airplay.

It can be incredibly random

I would say more AFL games are shown, albeit on TNT Sports.

You’ve misunderstood the point I was making.

NRL clubs pay the school fees ( about 40k pa ) to send thier top Jnr players to private schools. These NRL clubs then can’t be surprised when some of those kids decide they prefer Union and don’t return to the NRL.

It would be the equivalent of Coca Cola sending thier top interns to work at Pepsi for a couple of years and then being shocked when a few decide they prefer working for Pepsi.

Daft ?

So I guess the secret is out, the real top talent that the ARU will get is Des Hasler !!!
Eddie Jones makes him look like a completely sane normal human

all those players you mentioned had some background in RU - maybe the Roosters have more than other clubs

yeah - I can see why he might choose RU over RL. Seemed like an above average RL player rather than a stand out. At least if he plays RU he can make his own path. Also assume that maximising $$$ isn't a motivator as he will probably be fairly comfortable either way

Angus Crichton said he got a load of pushback when he said he'd like to go back to Union at some point on Hello Sport and it was from Fittler when he was NSW coach in particular. Funny given that his son ended up there.
