If it is really a medical /health issue I can see where the Govt is coming from.We would not allow games to proceed here I would imagine.

Then again the shadow of ru and its history of dirty tricks, looms in the background.

Maybe stop games going ahead, but not ban an entire sport (though I'm not yet convinced that's the case).

RUGBY LEAGUE EUROPEAN FEDERATION ISSUE STATEMENT ON RUSSIA

Following speculation that rugby league had been banned in Russia which surfaced on Saturday, the RLEF has issued the following statement.

“'The Ministry of Sports in Moscow sent a circular memo to all sports not included on the official State Registry of Sports, highlighting the need for event organisers to follow ministerial protocols surrounding security and medical cover.

Rugby league was not singled out in the letter. The Association of Russian Rugby League clubs (ARLK) meets all reasonable standards in these two areas and we intend confirming this to the ministry. The RLEF continues to support ARLK in its bid to reinstate rugby league on to the State Registry of Sports.”

Yeah either the RU or some other party with something to gain from RL being banned.

Sounds like your stock standard "RU is the only rugby" move to me.

I know this has been suggested a million times, but it'd be quite a bit harder for the Unions to pull these kinds of stunts if we changed the name of RL to something else, maybe we should officially change the name of the sport to just League, so on paper at least we aren't a rugby code.

How you'd go about officially changing the name I don't know.

Maybe? Frikin maybe?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What have I bn saying for the last 5 plus yrs!!!!

We're named after an In-glish fee paying school, do you want to be? Especially after seeing that rubbish that was in front of me earlier (Wimbledon tennis that it by the way, I was eating and the ppl eating wiv me wanted to watch da tenis).

The NSWRL said in 1922 we'll come up with another name replacing RL quite soon. How frikin long is "soon"?

But as has been said, footy hasn't bn banned in Russia.

If rugby though that us using the term rugby league was good for us, or bad for them then they would have used copyright law to stop us from using it, but it suits them for us to use rugby league as it promotes their game, and it can help them in saying to governments, "look we're the real rugby, just use us".

I was reading a rugby forum last month, and they were going on about a possible split in rugby union regarding possible law changes, and they said that rugby's laws are copyright, and if we decided to bring back some of our previous rules from 100 plus yrs ago then they could stop us, for example bringing back the continuous ruck instead of play-the-ball, just to say I think play-the-ball was a genius idea that we should stick with it.

How come there are two forms of rugby? It's not in our interest to keep on calling it that. We have formed a sport quite different to rugby, yet in Northern England our sport is called rugby, not rugby league or footy or football.

We are also in effect helping sevens, granted you could argue that sevens is helping footy. But most I'm sure would agree that we should call ourselves something other than rugby, as many around the world call us rugby. The US sevens association call themselves the RFL, surely we could take them to court for that, but will the English RFL do that? No way. Even ppl in Melbourne call us rugby.

The various forms of cricket are all under the governance of the ICC. Soccer in its various forms is under the governance of FIFA. Swimming, athletics, and "all the other sports" are under a single form of governance for each sport.

Rugby league has its own governance. Ditto for rugby union. They are clearly two totally different sports, and they compete openly against each other, unlike cricket, soccer, swimming, et al.
