Rugby League rebranded?

American comes Upto me
“Ok so nrl football heyyy, whats nrl mean”
“Umm National rugby league”
“ oh ok so you play rugby”

FAIL

Yeh, i know. Not perfect, but still better than what we have...

Im living in China atm, and it makes it THAT much easier to explain "yeh, its a kind of Rugby called "NRL". Not what the All Blacks/Wallabies play". Since i started saying that, people here can actually comprehend that its a totally different game.

Honestly though, the ARLC seem pretty intent on changing the name. If anyone has a better idea, they should probably get on it now. Give it a few years, "NRL Football" will be everywhere and we'll be stuck with it.

Did you tell him we don’t play rugby and we aren’t that national, but we are a league? Lol

We’ve let the horse bolt on rugby, time to rename the code to something totally different. Nrl is sht, needs to be some thing that stands out and the rest of the world can wrapmtheir head around.

Australia is weird in that the two main sports talk about the sport in terms of the top professional league. Kids say they play nrl or afl not rugby league or Australian rules, probably only place that does that.

We changed from the northern union to rugby league, no reason we can’t evolve again.

What do people think is the bigger issue with giving up on the name "Rugby". Is it the feeling of abandoning our history and the fact that we have every right to use "Rubgy" as the other mob? Or is it that we don't have any good alternative, and if we did, we'd drop "Rugby" in a heartbeat?

Both I’d suggest. An alternative needs to be something special that we can live with for the next hundred years. At the same time it sticks in the throat we have let union use Rugby and a sad reflection on our failure to now have to walk away from it all together.

Bump...

With regards to the new NRL.com and NRL Digital app, its good to see the ARLC being proactive in giving the game a brand independent of Rugby.

Its pretty clear the ARLC is looking to rebrand the sport into "NRL Football". If they can get the RFL on board, that
We'd get way more kids interested in the game, particularly in the VFL states...

Most kids grow up idealising American sports above the Australian ones. Imagine if the NRL could hook into the NFLs popularity and present itself as a potential gateway.

1 in a million would make it anywhere near the NFL but it would be a way to get kids interested in RL itself.

Plus, as far as marketing goes, its not a bad thing if RL starts being compared to the better parts of American Football. Thatd be a great way to grow the game internationally.

Hell, we might even get a few College kids come back the other direction

would be enough to rebrand the RL world.

NRL World Cup
NRL World 9s
NRL Federation

Not the name i would have chosen but (as with most things) the winner is the person who keeps turning up and the ARLC seem to be the only ones interested in the games branding...

I guess you can have Australian NRL Football

Like to see them try and change the NSWRL and QRL to NSW-NRL and Q-NRL

Or the RFL to be E-NRL

The pro changers seem to consist of topballer, the twit from Perth who whinges Sunday to Sunday and some bloke who hates the gifts his relatives give him. Sounds like a quorum of tools.

Whilst f**k off elsewhere. You won't be missed (FOEYWBM) is catchy not sure it clears up the code schism of union and league.
Yes but your comment does.

The fact the schism occurred over 122 years ago and the name has been in place for a minimum of 110 years should be a giveaway.

Otherwise I'll defer to anyone older than that to venture an opinion.

Interesting point.

Id say a bit of both. If their was a name I rckon we would move naturally there (we sort of did with "League", except that doesnt work outside of the people who are already fans) and doing it consciously is just too hard.

It would need to be a top-down approach. The fans would never collectively agree on anything, but they would just collectively passively accept something. (Which is why i think "NRL Football" will probably stick, if an alternative isnt put forward)

We must keep RUGBY, especially after what they did to the game in France.

Our game never sticks up for itself and we have let this private school 'rugby' stuff dominate. Even our players, officials and coaches refer to union as 'rugby'. It's a disgrace. At least call them rugby union.

Questions, though....

Is it worth giving up growth opportunities for a bit of stubborn indignation? I get that it hurts to accept defeat to RU, but is it worth losing expansion areas to this confusion just becuase we cant swallow out pride?

Stupid thing was we originally used rugby football leagues. If only someone around 1920 had decided we didn’t need the football leagues part!
