DeeGan is right, had the 40-20 been in the game with Stick was playing, canberra would have been unbeatable... he would have been nailing 40-20's all game, and a side that boasts players like meninga, stuart, daley, mullins, clyde... too much fire power to be held out.

sterlo was a great organiser and reader of the play,i don't think he had a strong boot on him so would struggle with 40/20's today but he would have adapted like all champions.

mortimer was much quicker over a short distance and could break the line,he was a better chipper of the ball.

if i had to choose over the two i'd probably take sterlo marginally.

steve morris was underated and always matched up well against those two, another guy i loved watching was johnny gibbs for manly,an excitement machine.

let's not also forget that it was a lot harder to get great distance & control when attempting a long kick with the leather footballs.

exactly right - & i wish they'd re-introduce the 5 metre rule - promote play before the defensive line instead of at it.

teams no longer have to earn field position - dummy half running under a 10 metre rule gifts it.

 selective reading mate - i said turvey was the best running halfback of his era.
After reading back I realised my mistake. Carry on ;-)
maybe not, but i'd hardly have thought that whilst in people's opinion sterling might be better, that mortimer wouldn't be amongst the best 100 ever produced. furthermore, he was a better leader than sterling imo.
I don't think Mortimer was better than Stuart either.

the spoon? you obviously can't remember the gun sides of 1990 - wests, saints, norths & gold coast! & souths played like absolute downies.

parra were easily still better than that lot.
Only Souths and Gold Coast were really crap. Parra on paper, without Sterling weren't far off from joining them.

The Gold Coast were awful

Illawarra went through a lean time as well but Parramatta's biggest problem was when Sterling wasn't out there. When he was they were close to a top 5 side.

Cosidering some of our seasons, that Norths in 1990 were 10 wins, 12 losses, 4 wins out of the 5 and a positive for and against, it was actually a successful year!

I think in 1990 Parramatta had a decent year. They wouldve been finalists had the top 8 been introduced back then, they actually won 12 games that year, thanks to Sterling.

Gold Coast were ordinary, till they became the Chargers.

Great to see the King make the top 10 Australian sporting heroes of the last 30 years in that 20 to 1 show.

Wally appropriately came in at number 6 while Joey was at 10.

If you needed confirmation that ET was better than Pearl then you need to watch Origin footage of the time. Pearl was a very good player that needed very good players around him to excel. Plus ET had that thing called longevity like Darren Lockyer has alongside his career.
