Ok im playing in a League vs Union match this week (40 min league and 40 min union)

now this is my first yr of league so it will be hard enough but ive never played union before...although i am the Jonah Lomu Rugby Master ..

i'll most likely be playing on the wing, anyone know any good websites about the basic rules etc etc or if you can give me any tips of what a winger should/shouldnt do

the biggest problem i think i will have is getting caught out in defence or not knowing where to stand

thanks

This could be interesting...very interesting...

You would think a winger would almost always be deep behind the defensive line. Do us all a favour and HOLD ONTO THE BALL!!! None of this kick for touch nonsense...There are 15 blokes on the field so you getting caught out in defense would be a team effort i recon...

Stay outside your opposition winger. Once they get on the outside of you you'll be hard pressed to cover defend against it. At the same time though, remember the sideline acts like another defender - so use this to your advantage.

Apart from that, just keep your eye on the play at all times, even if the ball is on the other side of the field - keep watch for a backline movement or a crossfield kick - if your opposition is half decent and sees you napping you'll find the attack aimed at you before you know what's happening.

If you get stuck and tackled with the ball, you need to let go of it behind you when you're tackled, and hope no one treads on you while you're down...

If you stuff up, just scream at your tiring pack of forwards and blame it on them for not being back to support you...

Or if all else fails... kicking duel!

I've played both codes to varying levels, so my advice is trust your instinct.

You probably know about the RL aspect, so here's some tips for the RU side of things.

Don't run sideways....you'll just get smashed. In RL you can crab sideways but when you get tackled you can just play the ball. In RU you'll get smashed and probably lose the ball because you've run away from your support (forwards).

When the ball is being passed out the backs and you are on the blindside wing, follow the ball across the backline for a bit. This enables you to clean up any dropped ball or even inject yourself between the centres.....but always remember to get back into position on your wing.

In defence, its already been mentioned before re: one on one tackling, but like RL communicate with your inside man on who you'll be hitting.

And be very very wary about crossfield kicks or kicks deep into your half. Get back there and help your fullback out. I've played quite a few games against RL players playing RU and we always used to use the deep kick against them.

Oh and remember...there is no 10m rule in RU (apart from lineouts) so you can get right up in the attacking team's face.

You're a winger hey.....

When playing the league half, run the ball.

When playing the union half, kick the ball.

Seriously.

Err...that's assuming the guy can kick. It's his first year of league...so I am assuming no.

A better option is running the ball towards your support and setting up a ruck rather than an aimless kick which can be run back at you with interest.

In saying that, there are times when you must kick in union. Getting the ball in your 22m with 4 or 5 defenders coming down on you and no support anywhere would be one of them.

I'd really be telling your team mates to really support each other in the RU half or else the opposition is going to tear you apart in the rucks. In RL you can be a bit slower getting back into the line because someone can take a hit up from dummy half. There is none of that in RU...you get tackled...you lose the ball if you have no one there.

my tip:

make sure you play the league half first

all the fat union forwards will be too buggered for the second half.

I've played union for a while.

Started off as a winger and the best piece of defensive advice is;

When the opposition is attacking their fullback will most probably slot
into the backline and if you are not in your own 20 your fullback will not
stand next to you in the line of defence (Because the attacking team may chip kick or play for territory).

So the bloke that you have to tackle is their fullback, don't worry about their winger,
he is your fullbacks responsibility or someone in cover defence NO. 7 or another loose
forward.

The best thing is if you can get off the line quick and as soon as the fullback gets the ball
hit him with everything you got, but you have to make sure he can not compete in the ensuing play as a support player, because then their will be two on one and your fullback will not have a chance. And remember to pop back to your feet and play for the ball. There numbers will be down if they spread it wide, so you have a great opportunity to either turn the ball over or get a penalty for them holding the ball.

in union once ur tackled try n swing urself round facing ur own goldposts n put the ball on the ground (for safety reasons put ur hands over ur head too...otherwise ull get stepped on)

For union, if you get the ball, run, and don't isolate yourself. That's basically all you need to remember on attack. Not much thought involved there. Your other backs should be trying to get you space, so if they do, use it.

Very important: If your fullback attacks, and leaves his space vacant, or kicks and chases(because he has to put everyone onside), you or the other winger should slot into fullback, becasue often a kick could come back. E.g fullback kicks to lefthand side and you are right winger, slot to fullback.

On defence, hang about 5m back of your other backs. 10,12 and 13 should be reasonably flat. That way, with you 5m back, you can cover a chip but if the ball comes wide, you rush up to the defensive line.

Wing isn't difficult

That really depends on if you're using a slide-defence or not though.
