How many players you think we would need to shed? Cant be any minimum wage players as they dont help the cap at all. 3 most likely players we wouldn't want:

Hiku
Tmm
Mckendry

Lets say we got all 3 entirely off our cap. I think we would be pushing itto even have $800k between them. 2 need to be replaced with $80k players at minimum. Lets be generous and say that we had $650k to offer him... thats still only half of his market value.

Only way it could work is if we got rid of a Moylan, Merrin, Tamou or Cartwright.

McKendry has cap concessions as a long term player, doesn't he? Might not be worth much.

I would be happy to lose all of Tamou, Hiku, TMM and McKendry if it meant getting Cronk into the side. The chances of it actually happening would have to be slim though I would think.

As I mentioned in a different thread, how would a captain coach arrangement work under the salary cap with coaching salaries exempt?

Kent has a point though. All the Sydney clubs barring us and Souths have sorted their halves arrangements for 2018. I don't know what Souths' cap is like but Cronk might be looking at a well below market offer either way.

Edit: Actually the Dragons could really use a half.

I doubt the NRL would allow it but if they did I think Cronk would be stupid to take that on, you cant be a captain coach these days the workload is too much even for someone like Cronk. Further to that I doubt the rest of the playing group would enjoy having the coach around them as part of the squad all the time, Cronk would be setting himself up for failure. He'd have to maintain discipline and culture while being part of the team, dropping players etc....it would not work, at least that's what I think.

Id love to have Cronk on board as an assistant coach or player next year, but not both.

We don't need Cronk on the field. Create a position for him at the Academy. Get it sorted Brandy. Give him the big office.

He does. He was the only player that qualified for it. But I believe Mansour may now be eligible for a grant as a long serving player.
I also though when Mckendry extended his contract a few years ago he agreed to a more modest and longer deal after being on a heavily back ended contract. I doubt he is on mega bucks now.

Isn't there an issue with offering players money below their market value?

Remember the problems parramatta had when they tried to sign Israel Falou?

He could agree to play for 400k but the NRL will likely come back and say his market value is $800k+, that's what must be in the salary cap.

Effectively this stops the NBA Miami Heat (when Lebron signed) situation where you have many star players on one team.

Yeah. Not sure how it works exactly but it was stupid when the NRL used it to force Folau into Union and it would be stupid if they forced Cronk there too.

Cronk on board in any capacity would be a master stroke. The odds of that happening are only slightly better than seeing a unicorn win the Cox plate.

We would have to get rid of half a dozen players to get him in. I don't see that happening.

Read today that there's some jockeying going on to get the salary cap above $9m. Canterbury & Roosters particularly keen because of f who they've signed. If that happened we may be able to squeeze him in just losing Hiku & TMM. But if it sits around 8.6-8.8 million it'd be unlikely.
