THE second major piece in Wayne Bennett's recruitment puzzle at Newcastle could be in place by the end of next week, with Dragons fullback Darius Boyd expected to agree to a four- year deal to join his coach at the Knights in 2012.
Boyd's signature, coming on the heels of skipper Kurt Gidley agreeing to a four-year extension, is regarded as a given by insiders at the club.
But the size of his contract will be crucial in determining whether the Knights go after any other big-name signings.
Significantly, Boyd's manager George Mimis also manages Bennett and Gidley.
He was in Newcastle last Monday to stitch up Gidley's deal and to kick off Boyd's negotiations with the club.
Sharks prop Kade Snowden, a favourite of owner Nathan Tinkler, is not completely off the radar but the odds of him returning home to Newcastle have lengthened considerably since Bennett's appointment.
Bennett's policy in the past has been to not pay his props any more than $300,000 a season and with the Sharks having just lost Luke Douglas to the Gold Coast, they are expected to find close to $400,000 to keep Snowden.
Newcastle won't get near that. But they haven't completely given up the fight either.
The Daily Telegraph has learnt that club officials rang Snowden's manager two days ago asking for more time to come up with a competitive offer.
"They want Snowden to sit tight and not do anything for at least another week to give them time to put something decent together," one source said.
"The plan is get Boyd across the line first before taking stock of where they are at salary cap-wise.
"It's pretty tight.
"The suggestion is they are not going to get anywhere near what Cronulla is offering and it's going to hinge on how badly Snowden wants to return home.
"This is where the lure of being coached by Bennett may come into play."
Once Boyd is finalised, hooker Isaac De Gois will be next cab off the rank. He has already agreed to a new three-year deal.
Meanwhile, negotiations to re-sign centre Junior Sa'u have been stepped up in the past few days following his return to form against the Sharks last Sunday.
With the futures of Bulldogs star Jamal Idris and Tiger Chris Lawrence decided, the Kiwi international has become one of the most sought after centres on the market.
His asking price is around $250,000 but he is keen to stay in Newcastle and it's unlikely that Bennett will agree to part with that sort of money to retain him.
Well I think we still definitely need to sign a rep quality centre.
Vaivai & Loko are very young and should be brought on slowly, probably on the wing first.
loko will be blooded this year...for next year he and Sau (if we get him) in the centres next year with burt and reddy on the wings and hayne at #1 is a solid backline imo
1. Jarryd Hayne
2. Luke Burt
3. Junior Sau
4. Jacob Loko
5. Joel Reddy
6. Daniel Mortimer
7. Chris Sandow
thats a better looking backline for us then what we have at the moment.
Stagger mentioned on rumours thread that Blair and Sau are no longer options
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but I've heard izzy wants out of AFL, and we are a chance. I don't know how true it is though.
straight out of the "what I heard" file
adam Blair and Junior Sau are no longer options.
straight out of the "don't shoot the messenger" file.
some announcements could be made within a fortnight between 2 to 4 players could be announced with my guess is Junior Vai Vai and Mutt Duffie firming.
I was also told of another outside back being close to signing, he hasn't even been mentioned yet but he has had some history with the coach.
Here you go Natheel
oh and on sau bring him over too has a relationship through the NZ team with SK and thats a massive bargaining chip.
i can see us parting ways with a couple of players next year....one sadly being Benny Smith. seems sk doesnt really rate him highly to have him on the bench and almost dropped last week. and that could be the reason for us chasing tom symonds...just a thought
If Ben Smith is shown the door he would only have himself to blame in the time he has had on field this season he hasn't shown what he can really do has he?
He is form is way down on 2009 and 2010.
I was also told of another outside back being close to signing, he hasn't even been mentioned yet but he has had some history with the coach.
It's strange he was so good in 2009 and 2010, but no good now.
Many people had him chalked in as our next captain.
we are linked because his 2 younger brothers play for our juniors
he has since denied that he wants out of AFL and he will honour his contract
then he will leave
