Matt Ballin - 4 year deal - Manly we hope:-

Ballin is a happy hooker at Eagles
Jason Avedissian

20 August 2008

MANLY hooker Matt Ballin is set to knock back offers from rival NRL clubs and remain at the Sea Eagles.

Ballin's manager George Mimis is currently in talks with the Sea Eagles about a four-season deal which could see the rake remain at the club until the end of the 2012 season.

The Broncos' junior has generated interest from several clubs but is tipped to knock back all overtures and remain at Brookvale Oval.

"It's certainly very close," Manly boss Grant Mayer said yesterday of negotiations.

"It's a matter of working out the length of the contract.

"I think he's made it quite clear he wants to stay and we want to keep him.

"It's a matter of making it all fit within the salary cap."

Ballin made his top-grade debut for the Sea Eagles with a man-of-the-match effort against the Wests Tigers in round two last year.

But with ex-Manly captain Michael Monaghan in the pack, the Kingaroy junior was always going to play second fiddle.

Monaghan's departure in the summer to Warrington in the English Super League paved the way for Ballin to find a permanent place in Manly's pack this year.

Ballin has previously expressed interest in returning to his junior club at some point, but has always wanted to remain at Manly.

"It's always been a home for me up there (Brisbane), but at the moment I really want to stay at Manly," he said.

"Definitely at the moment Manly is my team and I'm happy here."

* Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler has named a squad of 18 for Saturday's round-24 clash against the Tigers at ANZ Stadium.

Prop Jason King, who returned from injury in Sunday's loss to the Rabbitohs, is on a five-man bench alongside Adam Cuthbertson who missed out against Souths.

Teenager William Hopoate could also make an appearance on Saturday afternoon, after he was named on a seven-man bench for Manly's Toyota Cup clash against the Tigers.

Matt Head  Dragons

almost done deal

Meanwhile, Mathew Head is edging closer to a remarkable return to St George Illawarra after the Dragons confirmed their interest in the halfback.
Head is believed to have already told Wests Tigers officials that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season for the Dragons. Head played with the Dragons for five seasons, but his time there was marred by a succession of injury problems. He is almost certain to have played his last game for the Tigers even if the club is able to grab an unlikely finals berth

Sherwin Carney Swap
Daniel Lane and Adrian Proszenko | August 24, 2008

BRENT SHERWIN could make a shock return to the NRL after English club Castleford proposed a swap for discarded Canberra star Todd Carney.

Sherwin's Australian playing career appeared over when he left the Bulldogs to take up a three-year deal with Castleford, but The Sun-Herald understands the Super League battlers have shopped him to the Raiders in an attempt to free up funds to sign Carney.

The decision to punt Carney has left the Raiders with about $400,000 a season extra, but there haven't been any suitable replacements to spend the money on - until now.

Sherwin was considered one of the best halfbacks in the game when he steered the Bulldogs to the title in 2004 but has struggled with form and fitness since.

Injury has prevented the 30-year-old from making an impact at the Tigers, who have contacted the Raiders about the potential transfer.

"It would be a good move," an English source said. "[Sherwin] would offer Canberra a lot, while Carney - if a deal could be sorted with him - could rebuild his career with Castleford. Sherwin going to the Raiders isn't a certainty by any means, but it is on their table."

Carney will have to move overseas to reignite his career after he was sacked by the Raiders and deregistered by the NRL for 2009 after alcohol-fuelled indiscretions.

There has been speculation Carney may switch to rugby, although it's unlikely he'll be playing in Australia next year in any code. Asked if the Waratahs would be interested in signing him, new coach Chris Hickey said: "We've just about completed our playing roster for this year, so there wouldn't be any opportunities for 2009.

"There's a couple of spots in the forwards we're looking at but our backs are just about done."

Despite the loss of their star playmaker, the Raiders have confounded critics this year and are in contention for a top-four finish after recent strong displays. The experienced Sherwin would make them an even more formidable outfit and also be the perfect foil for in-form five-eighth Terry Campese.

Former St. George Illawarra Hooker Aaron Gorrrell (currently at the Catalan Dragons) -> Brisbane Broncos

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/sport/nrl/story/0,26746,24233409-5003409,00.html

Broncos have eye on Aaron Gorrell to fill team void

Steve Ricketts | August 25, 2008 12:00am

THE Broncos have moved to fill the void left by Michael Ennis's move next season, approaching France-based former St George Illawarra hooker Aaron Gorrell.

Gorrell has an option in his favour at Perpignan club Catalan Dragons and has yet to inform the Super League outfit of his intentions.

The 27-year-old played in Catalan's 38-32 home loss to Wakefield on Saturday and was one of the injury-hit Dragons' best.

Gorrell is best remembered in Brisbane for a matchwinning sideline conversion of a Brett Morris try on fulltime in a round 15, 2006 clash with the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium.

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen could not be contacted last night and football manager Peter Nolan would not comment about Gorrell.

But English sources confirmed the Illawarra product was in the Broncos' sights.

Ennis was the Broncos' best in the 25-21 win over Gold Coast Titans at Suncorp Stadium on Friday and the impact of his impending loss to the Bulldogs is starting to hit home.

Queensland State of Origin utility P.J. Marsh still has two years left on his deal at the Broncos but he can't make the top 17 at the moment.

Toyota Cup under-20s hooker Andrew McCullough is the other option. A bright future is tipped for the Dalby product, who also can play lock or five-eighth.

Peter Peters on his show a couple of weeks ago was laughing at the list of former NRL players in the English Super league saying many of them wouldn't get a start in the NRL if they came back. Aaron Gorrell was one of those players he laughed at. Now the Broncos are seriously looking at him as an option for next season. I reckon at least 75 percent of them would still be able to play first garde in the NRL.

There seems to be this superiority perception within people like Zorba that the NRL is streets ahead of the ESL.

Not anymore Zorba. Two names - Colin Best and Tonie Carroll. People thought they were gone when they went to England. Look what they have done since coming back.
