FOURTEEN predictions for the 2014 NRL season.
Which one do you think is on the money, and which is way off? Vote in the poll and leave your comments below.
Wooden spoon: Sorry Eels fans, we just can't see you breaking free from the basement. A third spoon in a row for Parramatta.
Drought breaks: St George Illawarra Dragons finally recruit enough Canberra Raiders players to break their losing streak in the nation's capital, which stretches back to 2000.
Bye bye, Cam: Melbourne will bid farewell to Cameron Smith as he chooses to end his career in Brisbane.
Milford mania: Anthony Milford will scorch the field to win the Dally M Medal. We don't know whether it will be for the Raiders or Broncos.
Darwin and Stuart: Eels fans descend en masse to Darwin and turn the city into a mini-Parramatta for the round 22 clash against the Raiders.
Tim returns: Tim Sheens will be the coach of an NRL club by the end of 2014.
Say cheese: The Bulldogs fail to sign Josh Hoffman but the disgruntled fullback will continue to feature in the club's unofficial team photos during the year.
Bring back Benny: After another disappointing year Wayne Bennett returns home to take charge of the Broncos.
Angry man: Dulux brings out a new colour paint after the latest blow-up from the Manly coach - Toovey Red.
Great Scott: Andrew Fifita to continue his stunning form from 2013 and take Matt Scott's mantle as the best prop in the game.
Centre stage: Jarryd Hayne to star in Origin with he and Michael Jennings to form a lethal centre combination.
Return bout: Nate Myles and Paul Gallen to duke it out in the old fashioned way in Origin 1.
Still crowing: Roosters to make it two in a row, beating the Cowboys in the Grand Final.
Welcome back, Hoppa: Two years out of the game means nothing to Will Hopoate, who takes up where he left off to once again earn Blues selection.

so hayne and hoppa will be good enough for origin in a team that won't move out of the cellar?

my pick - by round 4, the eels will start clicking and start surprising a few people.

Yeh some bold predictions there

Yeh I think the top 4 sides are out of reach for us at this stage but I have no reason as to why we can't compete with the rest of the comp

Souths
Roosters
Melbourne
Manly

For me those teams packs are to big for us to really match them manly are a bit depleted but they're just too professional not to be there again

Is there a reason the bloke thinks Hayne would play centre for NSW?

Why not fullback???

He's the only bloke in the sky blue who looks like he could win us a series, but he's still not been given a full series as fullback....... the madness must stop.

Game 1 this year showed everyone exactly why Hayne should be first picked for NSW and at Fullback.
He missed the next two games and we didn't look anywhere near as dangerous without him.

Probably because:
1. The Dugan
3. Hayne
4. Jennings

looks alot more threatening than:
1. Hayne
3. Morris
4. Jennings

Unless another centre steps up early in the season (maybe it will be Hoppa), the gulf between Hayne and the next best available centre is a lot greater than that between Dugan and Hayne.

I'd prefer Hayne on the wing. He plays his best football there.

He actually does. Remember he played on the wing outside Hopoate in 2011, even though Hayne is the superior player.

On the wing he can make a lot more carries than at centre, especially with Queensland's kicking game.

The top four sides are different each year though. Or at least, some of them are. Most years.

Melbourne and Manly have both finished in the top four in each of the past three years. Souths have finished top four in each of the past two years. This means three teams (Manly, Melbourne and Souths) have finished in the top four the past two years, showing that Schubert has been doing a great job.

However 2013 was a bit of an outlier. In the preceding four years ('09-'12), the top four has contained two teams that didn't make the finals at all in the previous year, and between '09 and '11 the top four only contained one team that finished in the top four the year before.

2013 is also an outlier (at least over the past five years) in that during the four years between (and including) 2009 and 2012, the top eight each year contained at least four teams that didn't play finals footy the previous year (in 2010 the top eight contained five teams that missed the finals the previous year). In 2013 only two teams (Roosters and Knights) made the finals that weren't there in 2012.

It's only really this year that most teams finished roughly where they did the previous year - six of last year's finals teams made the finals again (minus Canberra and Brisbane), and six of last year's bottom eight (minus Newcastle and the Chooks) missed the finals again.

I'm guessing the bloke making the predictions is expecting more of the same. And thank f**k Schubert is gone.

If he's fit I'd pick the cross-eyed f**kwit at fullback before Dugan. Hopoate will most likely play wing if he gets picked.
