Rumoured Targets 3

Dom’s manager says he’s meeting with the Knights on Friday amid interest from 5 other NRL clubs. Says they’ve ‘loosely mentioned’ wanting to keep him longterm but no offers or figures were ever discussed, and he’ll see what they put on the table when they meet. Looks like he’s after a 2 or 3 year contract wherever he signs.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS — 12 off-contract players

Off-contract:
Adam Clune, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Tyson Frizell, Bailey Hodgson, Hymel Hunt, Jack Johns, Brodie Jones, David Klemmer, Kurt Mann, Chris Randall, Enari Tuala, Dominic Young

Biggest flight risk: David Klemmer.

David Klemmer was linked to a move away from the Knights last season after he was reprimanded for an altercation with a trainer. Klemmer was linked with the Eels and even a return to the Bulldogs and it appears his current deal at the Knights will be his last at the club.

Biggest pay rise: Dominic Young.

Winger Dominic Young came into 2022 with just six NRL games of experience, but went on to score 14 tries in 20 games in a breakout season. The English winger has only added to his reputation at the World Cup and the Knights will need to up their next offer to retain the talented flyer’s services.

Almost locked in: Luke Brooks.

Luke Brooks has been linked to a move to the Knights for two years without actually signing with Newcastle, but the rumours have gathered momentum after the club let Jake Clifford go to join the Super League. Kalyn Ponga is set to move to five-eighth, with Brooks identified as the man to steer the ship in the No.7 jersey.

So depressing...

How is a player your club wants out a flight risk? Ridiculous article. The flight risk is the kid who we let bump up his pay to Uate + levels by not offering him an extension before he left for the WC. We could all see it coming but they could not. And I am almost certain he is as good as gone now. The manager’s words basically reflect the club’s piss poor efforts.

TBF the club may have wanted to re-sign Dom early but the manager may have wanted to do it after the WC to boost his price. It's not rocket science that the manager would want to do that and we all know not to trust exactly what player managers say in the media.

It's pretty clear that the club (and coach) rate Dom hence he played 20 games this year and AOB was always talking about him being the most improved player etc but just because the club wants to keep him doesn't mean the player will make it easy. Also remember that Dom would have come out here on a pretty minimal contract so it's not surprising that he'd want to be on the open market this time to bump up his price now that he's an established NRL winger.

Whilst I wish we had re-signed him already and I hope it doesn't become a protracted contract situation I still think we'll keep him given we're the club that gave him his opportunity.

Those players listed as of contract are after 2023 so we have 12 months before we clear the decks and sign another 12 players of similar standard.
Is Crossland signed and if so was it a year, if so add him to the list

Don’t know why but I suspect that we aren’t getting Brooks and we aren’t even chasing him anymore, possibly a smokescreen.
Think we will end up with someone else, maybe not good but things don’t sound or feel good
No rumours just bad vibes

No club would let that happen if they want to be a success. If they allowed that knowingly they deserve whatever follows.

It's 100% more incompetence. The knights are the only club that can bump up Dom's salary for 2023 and to not even make an offer to increase and extend his current deal is exactly what you would expect from a poorly run club

Except if it's the player who wants to go to market then what are they supposed to do? At the end of the day the player or manager may not have wanted to field offers until after the WC anyway, as I said I'd be taking what the manager says with a few grains of salt.

If that was his intention yes. However I believe the manager is alluding to the fact we allowed him to go into the shop window and that is why at least five clubs are wanting him now. It is also why his value has now potentially priced us out.

According to this article, apparently Hastings and Bateman didn't have a very good relationship while they were both at Wigan. Put that on top of Tigers already wanting to play him out of position, we should be pushing hard for him to come here, not Brooks.

Newcastle aren't that smart though

seems to be a lot of smoke around the “Hastings doesn’t get on with people” story. Might be why there isn’t much of a market for him. You have to be a Joey level talent to get away with being a knob.

What evidence do you have that we are even close to being "priced out" for Young?

The negative to this story is if Wigan lose Bateman for 2023 then they are very unlikely to release KPP as well
