Vaughan is a huge swing and a miss. Hardly surprising... the list of NRL players that have knocked us back is probably longer than those that haven't. Pretty sad and pathetic, really.

Browny might have ~$1.5-2mil to spend next year... at this rate he'll have 4 or 5 million by 2018 and very few plod-to-average players that will take it. All well and good to have cash in the bank, but it doesn't do much for you there.

Thing is we don't know how much we offered Vaughan, I suspect we didn't want to match his price tag and the Dragons did. He's a good player no doubt but $500k is elite forward money really and while I think he's a gun player look what's happened over the last few years when we've payed guys big money like that, I can't think of one guy who came here and actually lived up to their big price tag.

The value of all signings can only be measured by how much we get out of them in comparison to their pay cheque. E.g. Given we got guys like Barnett, Pete Mat and Elliot mid season for a bargain basement price this year I would say those three delivered good value for their price.

For 500k a year Vaughan would have to deliver a hell of a lot to be considered a good value signing. And I can imagine the meltdown that would happen on this forum if we shelled out that kind of money to get him and he then gets injured or turns up and plays like a reserve grader.

For $500k we could probably pick up a couple of experienced forwards without the same profile and we might get better value if they can plug the experience gap in our team.

We'll be under new ownership by Christmas. Playing for the club could become quite desirable soon after.

Very well said.

I like Vaughn but $500k would be too much to pay for his services

Exactly the type of signing that has bit us in the arse on multiple occasions

Can you guys just imagine what would've happened if Hagan was still signing the cheques.

Vaughan would be the richest man in rugby league

Why?

Vaughn is a quality player who had interest from several NRL clubs. We get guys who no one else is interested in, or who want to live in Newcastle for family reasons. Now I read Bird might end up at Manly, which lines up with his opinion of the Knights.

I believe he'll be worth it but I'm ambivalent about the whole situation at this point. I want at least one quality signing and Vaughan carried Canberra before the other forwards were there or were good enough. Hes not Ben Cross being made to look better in a good system. It's a big gamble and if you're wrong, it's a drag for seasons on end so I understand their reluctance.

Still, I would rather spend 500 and get Vaughan than 250 each and get two mid range players like Lawrence and Nathan Brown.

I'd throw some coin at Dylan Napa or a player similar. Young on the rise and could be anything. The type of player you could build around.

Yeah, I don't get this view that we need 17 x 200k players.

We need players who contribute to wins, not just "provide value" in a losing team.

I'm not too fussed but if life were fair we'd be the ones to sign Vaughan because Canberra poach all our players.

Life is not fair though - highlighted by the fact that we're Knights supporters lol.

Sounds like he might be signing the cheques at the Dragons they seem to be heading down the path we went offering overs for players like Tariq and Vaughan.

I would have loved to get a big forward like Vaughan but considering he's being held out of a first grade spot by Junior Paulo I wouldn't want to be getting in a $500k plus bidding war.

Whats wrong with Paulo? Guy is a beast and would be in front of a fair few NRL props

Meninga is considering him for an Aust jersey

Is there something wrong with Elijah Taylor???? Warriors to Penrith to Tigers and now possibly out of WT as well.

There's a guy we should be looking at, given he's on the outer we could maybe offer $300 - $350k which I think would be about right. It's a bit weird that he hasn't come up in any of the rumours though given we're being linked to just about everyone on the open market at the moment.

Especially when you consider our criteria for Jeremy Smiths replacement was to buy a "younger version of Jeremy Smith". I can't think of a player who resemebles a younger Jeremy Smith more then Elijah Taylor.
