To be honest I feel a bit sorry for Brock Lamb. He was thrown into NRL football probably a couple of years before he was ready and was given the burden of steering a virtual reserve grade team around against hardened NRL standard opposition week in week out without any really dominant leaders in the team. On top of that he copped more than his fare share of criticism when things inevitably didn’t go well, that game against the Bulldogs certainly springs to mind.
After showing some form at the back end of last year I get the impression he has probably seen some of the dollars on offer for decent NRL standard halves and decided (probably on advice from his manager) that he’s worth that kind of money. Then has had a poorly timed form slump and an injury to go with it and has spent most of the year in reserve grade which doesn’t help his cause.
All that being said, whilst I feel for the guy I think he probably needs to eat some humble pie, sign a one or two year deal on modest money and prove that he’s capable of playing first grade every week. Then if he manages that he will earn the right to be on big money.
For the record I have no problem with the club keeping him if it’s on the cheap. I’m glad we’re playing hard ball though because if this situation had come up 5 years ago Hagan would have paid him a million a year because he’s a local lad and tries hard. I’m glad those days are over.
