According to Toohey, we were very keen on Jamal Fogarty in the off-season, with McKinnon bringing him down to tour the club etc. Decided not to sign him as AoB had only been at the club for a week or two and wanted him to get a chance to see what we already had before signing anyone else.

From what I've heard we offered him a train and trial, it is what it is but I think the lesson to be learnt here is there are some players and in particular playmakers that develop a bit later. I've listened to a few podcast and spoke to a few ex players and in my opinion the way a lot of halves are coached in juniors is very detrimental to their development, it's very structured and players are often overcoached which kills their natural flair and instinctiveness. If you look at a lot of the better playmakers of the modern era like JT, Cronk, Keary, Dylan Walker, DCE, Maloney, etc none of them came through the traditional path of Harold Mats, Sg Ball, Australian schoolboys, etc most of them were signed abit later to NRL teams and didn't have the instinctiveness and flair coached out of them at a young age

The game certainly has changed and the product is hardly recognizable from what it was.

The players are bigger, fitter, faster and more athletic for sure, but the game is robotic, predictable and a sanitized version of what it once was. Overall I'd say it's less entertaining IMO

Tackling in the classic sense is dead, Wade Graham and Jake Trbojevic being 2 of the last exponents of a dying art.

The attack ? As you said the natural flair and instinctiveness is hardly to be seen.

The NRL are introducing a bunch of new rules again this week. Seems like they want to speed up the game and try to move away from the overly structured style the top teams play. I think it's positive and I think it'll suit more creative and instinctive halves in the future. Also, Watson is going to be a gun with the new rules. Wish he could stay fit.

Joey on nine saying he would reduce number of players on field to 12....thrn eventually 11......makes a lot of sense.

Less people on the field means less 3 man tackles.... Means less injuries

It's the $ situation that's the issue.
It's been said theyre after a prop to replace Herman ( promote Psami instead ) , didnt Glasby have a year to go as well ? ( promote King ) dont resign Watson ( he's our Kieran Foran )

Surely they could scrape some money together ?

The other alternative is to face the harsh reality and tell Pearce he's free to look elsewhere. It'll seriously do my head in if they extend the bloke.

Maybe we just have to suck it for another year and go hard for 2022

These are the halves off contract end of 2021

Tanah Boyd, Matt Burton, Erin Clark, Brodie Croft, Phoenix Crossland, Troy Dargan, Tom Dearden, Kyle Flanagan, Dean Hawkins, Ryley Jacks, Shaun Johnson, Lachlan Lewis, Jarome Luai, Jock Madden, Anthony Milford, Mitchell Pearce, Jordan Rankin, Adam Reynolds, Ashley Taylor, Connor Tracey, Sam Williams

These are the 5/8's off contract end of 2021

Jack Bird, Jake Clifford, Lachlan Croker, Blake Green, Ben Hampton, Nicho Hynes, Jeremy Marshall-King, Corey Norman, Hayze Perham, Josh Reynolds, Curtis Sironen, Billy Walters

Pearce won't go next year. Rumours are he'll be offered one more year.
I'm trusting Toohey on this with his connections. He has said we won't have the money next year and the focus is on replacing the forwards we have lost or moved on.
2022 might be different.
Mullen might work out on a one year contract if he's fit and comes for like $200,000. If we go for a 5/8 next year I reckon we need an old head on low money.
O'Brien is keen on Hoy but they are a long way off imo. O'Brien is to Hoy like Brown was to Lamb. No old head at 5/8 and I reckon he'll stick to see if the young guys develop.

We are saving with Glasby, Guerra and Esee going/gone less what Frizell cost and even if sign Watson it will be for less. Don’t sign any other forwards let King, Saulo, Jones etc develop more along with 2019 u20’s forwards.
Then buy a fairdinkum 5/8 at mid range cost while developing Crossland, Hoy etc and then when Pearce is done, hopefully 2021 let’s reassess.
2021 could still be a very good year.

I think it would start to get closer to touch football at that stage. I’m all for speeding the game up and having less stoppages but there are other things you can do rather than just changing the number of players on the field.
