We're seriously clowns if we change what worked for 10 straight games in favour of a journeyman that was lucky enough to play in a grand final.

Things should only get interesting if one of our halves go down injured or hit a bad patch of form. The 2 we've got have earned their jersey for next year.

Losing Keeley and keeping Brodie Jones is peak Knights.
To be fair, Jones seems to be transitioning to the middle where our depth is a bit shallow

Keeley is behind a fair few backrowers at Newie and with Dolphins aging pack would be a better chance there

I really dont see it as a big loss as unfortunate as it is to lose a local prospect

We've got a 32-year old who's constantly playing through injuries and liable to start physically breaking down any moment on one edge and Lucas/KPP/Cartwright on the other, none of whom are proven NRL players. Keeley has more potential than all but KPP as well.

Kind of feels like last year when Bradbury wasn't a big loss because he "wouldn't play first grade this year" - and then 3 rounds in we had a second-rower from the part-time squad playing as a middle in first grade because we ran out of depth, and then went through the rest of the season with Brodie Jones as the only middle replacement available.

Comments from Parr in the Herald + Toohey on Twitter suggest there's bad blood with Keeley's manager due to not getting an upgrade and Keeley maybe kicking stones about it behind the scenes so maybe it was unavoidable, but on ability and need alone I don't understand how it can be brushed off as not a big loss from an outside perspective. He was one of our best juniors and playing a position we're far from settled in short, medium or longterm.

A player manager can ask for upgrades all he likes but we’re talking about a guy who has played about 30-40 mins of first grade in the past 2 seasons, if he was banging the door down for a spot in the top 17 it might be a different story. At the end of the day we don’t know what the Dolphins were offering but he probably does have a better chance of playing regular first grade there.

It’s always a shame to lose a promising young player but sounds like he was looking for the fastest route to first grade which probably isn’t here.

He reminds me a little of Jarryd Hayne? Hopefully only his playstyle and not his personality!

Is he big enough to play a bit of second row? In the halves he is surely behind Hastings, Gamble & Cogger. He won't get to play fullback when Ponga is fit. He looks too good for reserve grade. I wonder where we play him.

Wests Tigers are preparing to make a rich play for Newcastle star Bradman Best once the November 1 trade window opens.

It is understood that the Tigers will want to make Best one of the highest paid centres in the competition by offering a long-term deal worth more than $800,000 a year. The Tigers are on the lookout for a strike centre with Best at the top of their list. They could also make a play for St George Illawarra centre Moses Suli, who made his NRL debut at the Tigers in 2017.

While the Tigers are ready to pounce on Best, Newcastle are confident they will lock him down before he is free to negotiate with rival clubs and have already been engaged in positive talks with Best and his new agent.

Coach Adam O’Brien and head of football Peter Parr were spotted catching up with Best and his family last month as they move to keep the strike weapon at their club.

The Knights will put together a three-year contract worth more than $700,000 as they look to keep their finals team together.

Even that contract would make Best among the top paid centres in the game. Only the likes of Joey Manu ($820,000), Valentine Holmes ($875,000) and Jack Wighton ($850,000) are expected to earn more than him playing at centre when his new deal kicks in.

After an inconsistent start to this year Best found his groove in 2023 culminating in a NSW Origin debut. He was part of the Kangaroos extended squad before being narrowly overlooked for a place in the 21.

Newcastle are desperately working to keep their improving squad together.

Utility Phoenix Crossland has already accepted less money than his market value to help keep the team in tact after inking a new two-year deal.

The Knights are also in talks with prop Jacob Saifiti to keep him at the club. Newcastle have Best, Saifiti, Dane Gagai, Enari Tuala, Mat Croker, Tyson Gamble and Tyson Frizell among the free agents come November 1.

Can’t see Best leaving, he’s a Knight to his core, but that’s a lot of money. Just hope we don’t end up in a massive bidding war. We have to keep him. He’s the best junior we’ve brought through in 10 years.

If they want to pay him 800k, good luck to them both. He ain't worth that.

700k for one strike centre is okay. We need to find a cheapie enabler for our other centre though. Gagai isn't on top much is he?

I think Gags was on around $500k. People were more worried about the length of his deal than the price, from memory.
