Rumoured Targets 3

The Dylan Brown deal in a vacuum isn't the issue. It's trying to fit both Kalyn and Fletcher in with it. If all this year the halves had been Gamble & Cogger, the sentiment would be "well at least we've got Dylan Brown coming to partner Gamble" instead of "how the hell is it going to work?"

I don't think Sexton or Fogarty or whoever magically turns Sharpe from a great footballer we're crowbarring into 6 into a truly great 6, or Ponga from a great attacking weapon into an organising half, either. They have to figure it out for themselves.

Can’t see it any other way than 1 Ponga, 6 Sharpe, 7 Brown. Cogger and Gamble in Cup.
With Dom coming back Rwing then Schiller back to Cup as well assuming Gags extends

Yeah, we sure waited patiently signing Brown for $1.3 million, realistically if we had of waited patiently, we could have got Sexton for $500k and a rep prop at $800k or 2 first grade standard props at $400k each.

Instead, our already unbalanced cap is currently sitting at $2.7 million for half our spine without a first-grade standard halfback (and none coming through the grades.) and a developing 5/8th who's best position is at fullback.

For next year we have what 3 forwards who would make first grade anywhere else? Safiti, Frizzel and Lucas?

This year will be a honeymoon compared to trainwreck that 2026 is shaping up to be.

The “we should have waited and signed Sexton, Forgarty, etc.” doesn’t really make sense. Not referring to your post specifically, there’s a few people who have mentioned it.

There’s a reason neither one of them were any good until their respective forward packs were killing it, there’s also a reason neither of their current clubs have prioritised keeping them. In fact the Dogs have gotten rid of Sexton to have 2 5/8 next year like we will. They’ve also made a number of comments in the media leading up to this saying they weren’t happy with Sexton.

Neither of those players would do any better in our current system than our current halves.

The only way the idea makes sense is the extra money for forwards, but having money for first grade standard props doesn’t mean we sign any. We offered more money for Latu but unsurprisingly he didn’t want to sign here. Same with Leo. We don’t have a lack of $$ to sign forwards now. What we lack is desirability that any decent forward would want to come here over another club.

Despite what people might think of our former coach Nathan Brown, he hit the nail on the head when he decided to “keep the powder dry” and patiently wait for the right players to become available. That’s what lead to Pearce signing with us because we had enough $$$ to throw a good offer at him when it became apparent that he wasn’t staying at the Roosters. I think there were a few other signings like that over the Brown years, we got Klemmer in sort of similar circumstances from memory. Brown was always ready to pounce and knew that being patient would pay off.
indeed Mooney and Brown were exceptional. I do remember the article at the time quoting Brown. The recruitment was strategic, with an emphasis on players coming from successful cultures.

Nah if that's what Brown said he was doing, he's rewriting history. He was throwing money at everyone. Having space for Pearce was just because he struck out on a bunch of guys earlier in the year. Kieran Foran, Matt Scott, Jack Bird, James Graham, Paul Gallen, Dale Finucane, Matt Prior, Cooper Cronk. All for bigger money than anyone else had offered. Those are just the ones we know about. It was just luck that we wound up with Pearce and Klemmer instead of Foran or Bird + old Matt Scott or old Gal.
you read too much FOX dribble

Dr Dr you can't be this smug & dismissive if you're gonna be wrong.

______

Paul Gallen was offered more than twice as much by Brown than he would have got to stay at Cronulla. Source? Paul Gallen: https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/08/27/why-gallen-turned-down-knights-to-stay-loyal-to-sharks/

______

Other names I cited which were chased by the club, that was reported by Barry Toohey:

Newcastle Knights recruitment failures fail to faze coach Nathan Brown

THEIR targets have included some of the game’s biggest names — Kieran Foran, Matt Scott, James Graham and Jack Bird.

Melbourne Storm’s Dale Finucane had a look around the club’s facilities. Likewise Matt Prior, who was offered a good deal to leave the Sharks.

Ben Matulino was spoken to and Cooper Cronk sounded out. An offer was in for Shaun Kenny-Dowall before it was withdrawn following his arrest for alleged cocaine possession.

And they are just the players we know about.

Despite being armed with a $3 million war chest for next season, the battling Newcastle Knights have so far struck out in their bid to land a recruitment blow since the signing of Cowboys wunderkind Kalyn Ponga last November.

______

We got Aidan Guerra after this, probably on more than $500K, which I would say turned out okay even though he was a bit cooked, brought some veteran leadership. Connor Watson after this, in July - $600K per season allegedly, yuck. Foran would have cost way way more at the time though, as would have Bird (who I've heard was almost over the line but backed out, source.... Jack Bird: https://www.nrl.com/news/2017/06/14/why-bird-knocked-back-knights/), and Cronk would have been over a million obviously but we were never in the race,

Ended up with Moga, Ese'ese, Heighington, Lillyman, from memory on top of them, all a bit overpaid.

I don't think it can be plausibly argued that a million is free at the end of 2017 for Pearce if we had Foran already, and over $800K is there for Klemmer if we'd gotten Gal, or Scott, or whichever other old bloke.

"Fox dribble" eh?

I would have liked Fogarty. Has a better kicking game than anyone else we have. But it is what it is.

I remain unconvinced the Brown signing is a good deal for us, but I'd much rather have 1.4M tied up in Brown than 800k in Hastings and 600k in Brailey. Your average punter outside Knights fans have zero clue that's where that money is coming from.

Sighting 2 Rupert Murdoch "news" links to dispute reading and believing Rupert Murdoch dribble is just too funny.

It's the media - it's their job to write "stories" - A generous helping of common sense is required by the reader.

All roster managers would be, and should be inquiring about every player of note that becomes available - due diligence. Picking up the phone to inquire is one thing, actively making offers another.

IF and it's a BIG if, the reports in the Murdoch media that Haas is interested in exploring options I can guarantee Sully has already made the call......inquiring and making an offer are very different.

Goodness knows the media never lie. DM me , got a 2 for 1 bridge sale going this week only.

Nathan Brown was very clear about the type of player he was trying to recruit. He was trying to get leaders to the club hence he went after a bunch of guys who would have provided that.

Honestly I hope POS does the same thing and looks at leadership as a commodity that we desperately need. Right now we just look rudderless and no-one on the field is prepared to step up and grab this team by the scruff of the neck.

Don't know what to say at this point. The links are to the nrl website. News Corp hasn't had any ownership interest in the NRL since 2012, so it's categorically not the Murdoch press, unless you count them owning about 70% of the Broncos.

These "stories" contain DIRECT QUOTES from the players. Yes you can't trust everything you read in the media, but they generally don't include direct quotes from their sources if they weren't something the person said. That can land you in hot water. I have heard, at the very least, Paul Gallen explicitly talk about the money he was offered by Browny, on the radio. It wasn't mere "due diligence", and the only "common sense" response to what Gallen says he was offered is "Jesus Christ, is Browny fair dinkum?"

Feel very silly for bothering responding to you. I could show you video footage of your two bridges on fire, and you'd just insist they're not, never bothering to turn around and check, as they burn down behind you lol.

I'll miss Woosh.

He's been ok at times but another year and he becomes that little bit slower again. It's kind of funny timing with Dom returning, though.

Guessing Schiller to centre is the plan. Isn't that why we signed him in the first place?

I'm torn between him declining versus needing his experience in a squad that only seems to be getting younger. 400k ain't that much. Where are we spending all this free cap space?
It's not that we can't afford that money, it's that we can use it elsewhere.
Plug and play Schiller who is already contracted, now that's 400k to use to try and help lure middle forwards etc.

You're missing my point. Where can we use it? No-one wants to come here.

I’ll miss Gags, but better if he goes out while “on top” and not a year too late after the game has well and truly left him behind.

It’s a shame that the days of older players mentoring the next generation in NSW Cup are gone.

Yep it's a move I can get around. We've paid for Schiller, we're getting Dom I assume, we are managing this in a smart way for a change.
