Rumoured Targets 3

Great news about Cogger leaving. Will be interesting to see who this hooker is that we’re looking at. Starling would be a good call, we desperately need someone who can be dangerous around the ruck. We literally haven’t had a hooker like that in years.

I’d swap Votano for a good hooker. He’s talented but unfortunately fullback is his best position and I’m struggling to see how we fit him in. Not sure Wishart would be worth the trade though as I’m not sure what his ceiling at hooker is.

FTR I don’t think the secret under contract hooker is Wishart. Last week Toohey seemed to imply he would be a contingency if the first option didn’t work out. My gut feeling is it’s someone like Starling as the Raiders have one too many now they’ve signed Brailey. I’d much prefer Starling over Owen Pattie who imo is overhyped and not a clear upgrade/more ready than Arthur.

Yeh Starling would make the most sense out of the clubs with a surplus of hookers. Just struggling to get my head around the timeline of signings this year between him, pattie and brailey. They announced Starling in May, after pattie in February and brailey in March.

Did he leave the club on good terms? Just looking back at the squads, we had a few hooker prospects in 2018/2019, including Levi so may have seen a blocked path. Did the club didnt even offer him a contract? Kinda ironic if that's the case, as now he is light years ahead of levi at the same club. Typical Newcastle though.

My biggest concern with Starling is that he's doing it behind arguably the best pack in the comp. It'd be a near miracle if newcastle gets anywhere near that level next year. But on the positive side he is a pure hooker, is entering his prime years and his game is pretty well rounded. Has 80min in him too, and wont break the bank.

He didn't get offered and has a massive chip about it.

My feeling is it isn't him.

Maybe one of the Broncos hookers.

Yep that was my fear, strikes me as a guy who may hold a bit of a grudge! Haha it wasn't like he went to Canberra for a much better opportunity (behind Hodgson/Havilli) or money (development deal).

A grudge is probably warranted though, sounds like he did more than enough coming through the junior sides to warrant more of a crack plus he appeared to be pretty good mates with a bunch of the players (Ponga, Watson etc.).

And in terms of broncos hookers, It was today I realised Billy walters is 31, and will be 32 by the time the 2026 season begins. Hopefully that's not the route theyre going down.

Cannot wait to hear how much damage we have done to Cogger’s career courtesy of Fox Footy and their stellar brains trust. Made up of people who believe their own shit.
As for Tommy Starling, the thing to remember is it was not an AOB call to let him go. That was a Brown call. So it is not completely off the possibility list.

Anyone here remember how much a year Cogger signed for?

Around 350-400k springs to mind, but then again I cant find reference to that anywhere so take that with a grain of salt.

We signed him off the back of looking half decent filling in for cleary, so it wont be cheap, but not starting half money.

That’s about the same as I thought off the back of the GF win. Cogger isn’t a superstar, but if it means Penrith get Schneider off the books I am a happy camper.

Yeh he was signed in August, so well before the GF, thankfully as he probably would have commanded negotiated more.

At the time of the signing he was halfback in 4 wins out of 5 games with Cleary missing, and Penrith were keen to keep him too.

Starling was let go because he was considered too small and couldn’t defend. Brown kept coaching him to go high and wrap up the ball- doesn’t work for a player of Starling’s statute.

Sticky just told him to go in hard and bring them down- don’t worry about the wrestle. There was an article on it a few years back when he first started making an impact at Canberra.

Yeah the thing with grudges is they tend to fade in time. It wasn’t the current regime who let him go in the first place so I don’t think it would be that much of an issue.

That being said given how good the Raiders are going and how much they have all been drinking the Ricky cool-aide I have a feeling Starling wouldn’t want to leave there anyway.
