Rumoured Targets 3

I wouldn’t want the club to be having contract talks with Gags for another 3-4 months. See how his form is over a good chunk of the season to get a proper sample size. If he’s still looking good later in the year then sure I’d be happy enough if they offer him another year.

It also depends on if we have a couple of young guys banging down the door for that right centre spot. If I’m Holbrook I’m telling all the young outside backs at the club that they can potentially grab themselves a first grade spot for next year if they put their best foot forward.

Also another thing to factor in is the combination with Dom on the right wing. I reckon Dom owes a fair few of his tries to Gags over the last few years. Gags is one of the best centres in the game at giving the ball to his winger in a favourable position. He also helps Dom out in defence a lot too, which I would be concerned about if Dom was paired with someone else.

Who's next in line for the right centre position? Votano? Schiller? Hunt? If Gagai can keep up his level, probably still a better option?

The position has been there for the taking over the past 5 years for players like Mapapalangi, Pryce, McCarthy, Annan, Schiller, Votano and Hunt.

The next crop De Courcey, Winter and Seve will probably have a better chance considering the old man will be 45 soon

for the right coin keeping Gags is a no brainer, 300+ NRL games is invaluable to the young outside backs in the squad, next man up can stick it out on a wing for a season (if they're good enough) to learn from the master what it takes to perform for 300+ games in the NRL

Upgrade Lucas and offer best and ponga the same as they are on now (or increase based on percentage of salary cap when broadcast deal goes through)

pretty straightforward me thinks

It's not going to come down to money for Kalyn. He might sus out the market, but I don't see him leaving if he smells success coming here. He's worked too hard for too long to make it happen to walk away when it arrives.

I don't really care about others perception of him. Kalyn loves Newcastle. It's his home. This team is his team. I hope the supporters that he's never been able to win over see that in him this year.

Biggest issue with Kayln in the eyes of most fans is his durability, especially over the last few years. Hes only cracked 20 games once in the last 5 years, last year being the worst with only 13 games. Its a tough pill to swallow when the club is paying him $1.3+ a year.

Its clear he wants success here but I can also understand the growing chorus to let him move on

If he were born in Cessnock, they wouldn't bat an eyelid.

I do wonder if the plan is Brown, KP
And Sharpey on life deals. Big risk but the reward of them playing together every week for years would yield the big prize. We have already seen what they are capable of.

You'd think Ponga would have to take a bit of a pay cut, or at least certainly not an increase. What other clubs will be able to afford him at 1.3M? Anyone is going have to do some creative accounting and they're probably going to have to see him as the missing piece rather than the first building block. Outside of Roosters, Dogs, Warriors (?) or maybe the Bears, I'm not sure who is going to stump up his price.

I agree with perverse, I genuinely think we will be his first choice. It'll be interesting to see if another club can offer him something better than he's already getting here.
