Why Lomax bombshell could land Eels huge halves coup in $650k twist — Crawls
No wonder Jason Ryles isn’t blowing up about Parramatta potentially losing Zac Lomax.
Lomax’s
rumoured exit to the rebel rugby comp R360 could be a huge win for the Eels, given it could free up as much as $650,000-a-season of salary cap space to have a red-hot crack at signing young Storm playmaker, Jonah Pezet.

And if it turns out the mail is right and Lomax has agreed to a deal (despite his current contract not expiring until the end of 2028), you wouldn’t blame the Eels for wanting to let him go right now.
On the flipside, can you imagine Pezet teaming up with Mitchell Moses in the halves next season if that was to come to fruition?
As good a player as Lomax is, it would be much easier finding someone to take over Lomax’s spot on the wing than it would be finding the next best young playmaker to replace Dylan Brown.
That’s not denying Lomax had a terrific season after switching from the Dragons, and on his day has been a match winner for the Eels.
But to mix it with the heavyweights in the big end of season games, the Eels need to strengthen their spine and not rely as heavily on Moses.
We’ve saw this season how when Moses was out injured the Eels fell to pieces.
Yet their form over the backend of the season left no one in any doubt they are more than capable of beating the best teams when at full strength.
Pezet would only add another dimension to Parramatta.
Factor in young fullback Isaiah Iongi will return a better player with another preseason under his belt.
Perhaps it explains why Ryles didn’t seem too concerned when contacted by Buzz Rothfield in recent days and asked if the Eels would seriously consider releasing Lomax.
The fact Ryles conceded “we’d have a serious think about it” said it all.
If there was no truth to the rumours, you’d think Ryles would have squashed it on the spot.
Or he would have been at least a bit filthy at the fact a player was being courted/shopped despite having three years to run on his existing deal.
Yet reading between the lines, it is sounding like both Lomax and Parramatta have already moved on.
Meanwhile, Pezet is contracted at the Storm for 2027, but has a clause in his contract allowing him to exit following Jahrome Hughes recently agreeing to a contract extension.
Already clubs are lining up for Pezet’s services, with the Raiders also keen on the 21-year-old.
Pezet has been biding his time patiently in the Storm system for a few years now, but showed his class in the week one finals win over the Bulldogs.
Even though it was just his second starting game of the season, the way Pezet rose to the occasion confirmed he’s overdue to own an NRL starting jumper.
