Call for salary cap top up

A few eyebrows were raised last week at the news Penrith had re-signed Dean Whare for another five seasons, given almost every player has been secured for 2018 and beyond. The Panthers have built their roster for next season budgeting for a $9 million salary cap.

While the initial proposal by the NRL is well short at $8.3m, it's expected that will rise after negotiations. Given the uncertainty around the cap for next season, Panthers boss Brian Fletcher has proposed an idea that will prohibit clubs from being sanctioned for minor breaches of the salary cap next year. Fletcher said clubs should be allowed to spend up to $300,000 of their own money on top of the cap to compensate for the NRL's lack of clarity.

No, I think that's right. His 2015 stats also suggest that he averaged 75 minutes per game for us (19 games, 925 tackles, 0.65 tackles per minute......so (925/0.65) / 19 = approx 75).

I have a theory why people think Peats played fewer minutes than he did (and I must admit prior to checking number I was in that camp). When we played a 2nd hooker on the bench, Peats would often stay on the field and play as a running backrower when the 2nd hooker came on. So Peats averaged 75 minutes, but the alternate hooker played a lot more than 5 minutes per game.

I recall that Kaysa actually played that role most of the times both he and Peats were on the field.

However, you're correct for the times Peats and IDG were on the field at the same time.

And if people don't remember that does it suggest he didn't provide much as a backrower? So you save an interchange but at some cost.

Lol he wants clubs to not be punished if they are over the cap.

What about If a club is within the cap limit, will they be allowed to legitimately go over by 300k and not face any punishment???

That's true. We know he can play long minutes. That's his strength. The important point for Kaysa Pritchard is that we still carried another hooker on the bench in every game Peats played last year. Brad Arthur rates him, but I don't think he'll be able to turn him into an 80 minute player like he seems to be attempting. Kritchard needs to come off the bench because at the moment his speed and power are being wasted.

In 16 games last year Kritchard averaged 4 runs for 36 metres and 17 tackles (less than 1.5 missed) all in less than 27 minutes. Better numbers than Segeyaro's limited sample this year, though the latter is stuck at dummy half where there are less opportunities to run.

You have to remember that very few.of Pritchards run in the last half of the season were at dummy half. He was used as a running forward.

Also important to note that BA has maintained an 80 minute hooker this season, despite that player not being up to it, even when a backup with NRL experience in King could have been utilised interchangeably. Perhaps BA now sees a backup hooker as a wasted interchange player. I agree with him and he just needs to find one that is up to the job.
King hasn't been fit enough for first grade all year. As soon as he gets some match fitness he's out with another injury. With three hookers in the squad (plus Nelson) I doubt Arthur's really wanted to go with only one in the 17.

And that's really the main point when it comes to Kritchard's future in the team. We could bring in someone who plays 80 every week (and rarely gets injured) like Lichaa and still use Kritchard's speed and workrate for impact in the middle.

Graham deal breaker?

We mentioned last week that Newcastle had identified James Graham as a recruitment target, with the Bulldogs looking to offload their skipper to accommodate the potential arrival of James Tedesco and Aaron Woods at Belmore.

Only problem for Canterbury is that the Englishman is on a heavily back-ended deal worth close to $1m for 2018. While Graham has plenty of qualities that will benefit a team like Newcastle or the Wests Tigers, there is no way any club will pay anywhere near seven figures for the prop.

I would consider Graham for 2 years if the Dogs paid half his reported final year back ended deal.

But is it really worth it? Surely not in every case. Clubs in salary cap trouble might be forced to do it but you'd have to assume the Bulldogs are well run. Why would they need to help some other club benefit from a fire sale?
