Why do NFL teams have 3 QB's on their roster, but place their starter on IR if they're out for the season?
Because a back-up is not the same.
This is easier to implement in the NFL with trades, etc., of course.
And I'm not suggesting that any of the injuries we suffered in 2026 are the catalyst for this.
But I'd hate to see, for example, Newcastle lose Ponga and/or Brown for the season in Round 1 (hypothetically), and then basically kiss their season goodbye.
As I said - I am not an expert; an Injured Reserve wouldn't necessarily work, because having your star player's salary still count on the cap, but their roster spot not count, is probably not as useful in the NRL
But allowing for machinations when a player is out for the season would allow for a more even competition.
If a team is ruled out of being a genuine Premiership nuisance early in the year because they've lost that star player, that kind of sucks.
