I think Bernie would be more closely responsible. Although he'd have a corporate sales/sponsorship guy under him that would be mostly to blame I would say.

On Edit: On second thought, the blame rests squarely on the boards of the last few terms, for screwing our image to the point that we weren't marketable to sponsors. You can't blame anyone in the current administration, not really..

It's obvious he needs help in his negotiating because all BA seems to do is take a gamble on up and coming players like Gutherson which has worked, some obviously haven't or play overs for has beens like Watmough.

For a coach that was banned by the NRL, Shane Flanagan seems to get his man. James Maloney being one who is apparently on $600K tops. I just think that besides the old Manly connection Arthur's recruiting skills are way overrated as is our team and his coaching.

I'm not saying to sack him but if he doesn't jag a top 8 position this season he has failed, miserably. Next year will be his 5th year here and if he fails again his contract should not be renewed. assuming it ends this time next year.

His recruitment has been rather good IMO however we are suffering from a team that is in its infancy as far as combinations go and the age of its players. He hasn't exactly failed at this stage of the season and IMO we are where we should be based on our team as it currently sits. If we don't make the eight I don't think we will do

Brown, Matagi, Vave and Hoffman IMO have been astute buys - they were purchased to compliment our side.

Moses will improve as his combination with Norman improves.

I don't think it's doom and gloom at all but we have a team that as far as combinations go has been limited in preparation and due to injuries it's been re-shuffled continually.

6 of our remaining 10 games are against the bottom 5 teams on the ladder.
1 of the other games is against the Storm in a 'no Origin players' game.

The 3 hard games we have left are this weekend vs Dragons (without 2 Origin players), and 2 Broncos games.

I really really think that it is fair to expect 13 wins there?

And yet for 9 years we let a popularity contest decide on the leadership of the club which in turn resulted in the "darkest period in the clubs history".

Thats the way I feel as well, next year he will be in his 5th year and there can be no excuses.

You don't think that BA was building towards good results and then 2014 Hayne walks out then 2016 salary cap armageddon set him back a few years ? Also, he did good getting Foran and his personal implosion was another factor that has postponed our success. 2018 IMHO will be the first year he really has had a chance. Do you really think he's had "5 years" like other coaches might have had ?

I tend to agree. Finals are a realistic chance this year given the run home we have. 2018, Finals footy should be the absolute bare minimum expectation.

Fair call that too.... But you can point to the fact that even with 2016's disruptions, our record at the end of the season was good enough to have had us playing Finals footy had we not been stripped of points, and Foran only played 7 or 8 games and didn't contribute all that heavily in terms of the on field success we had. Therefore, I think we are entitled to think with Foran no longer a distraction, we should be building on last year and most defintely from 2018 onwards, be Finals regulars.....

Unless we come bottom four next year BA should get another two. This shapes as the first year he's had a team with stability off the field and people want to show him the door next year?

We have clearly improved and continue to do so in terms of our roster for next year

Isn't it more like saying Bellamy didn't take his team to the semis in only 2010? Which he didn't? We were cheating the first 2 years BA was here too and we never got near the semis. That is quite different to the Storm who actually played in semi final games when then were cheating (06, 07, 09)

Yeah but we were top four when they handed the punishment down. How many of those 13 were with Foran and Peats, from how many games?

I was responding to a post that if BA doesn't get is to the semi's ONCE in 5 years he has failed and should be sacked. Melbourne only made the semi's in those years because they were cheating - same as us in 2016. Just because we got caught doesn't negate the fact that BA has taken us to the semi's ONCE in his first 3 years as coach.
