I was listening to Talkin Sports about a month ago and they were talking about Melbourne and their ability to just fill a hole when someone leaves. Anyway, I cant remember if it was Tunksie or Robbo but they knew as they'd seen the contract and said that they could confirm, for a fact, that the contract to Tohu Harris is for 1mil a year!

I nearly drove off the road! Basically the reason they were saying it is that they said whilst he is a good player, he is not a Thurston or Cronk of even a Matt Scott etc.

They were basically saying that coaches very rarely plan ahead and leave the place in a better position and decisions like that only serve to prove a coach only has a couple of seasons to make an impact.

Tohu Harris on 1 million a season is insanity.

Well if that's the case then I guess maybe Tohu won't be looking for that Eject button! He can probably handle being coached by an L-plater like Kearney for a year or 2 and will console himself and his frustrations by watching his bank balance go further and further north when the monthly payments come in!

I don't know if the club will "explode" exactly. Have you seen the Cooper Cronk clone? They just keep spitting them out, its a very good club.

When they were going through some of the guys on the radio who they have lost due to money and they are just replaced with an up and comer without much interruption it was pretty surprising. They gave the Kevin Proctor example and someone just comes in and fills the spot.

Yep they got overs for 5 years, off course they were happy to take unders to stay in a competitive team.

Especially after they head their titles stripped, until the big 3 cheats leave Melbourne they will still be profiting from their cheating.

If you consider the mark of a first grader to be his/her defence (and I certainly do) then plenty of those blokes aren't first graders.

Then there are 'marginal' defenders - the kind of player you can get away with carrying two or three in your defensive line (e.g. Vave and Moses) but not half a dozen of them. All the Warriors outside backs fit into that category.

Some of those guys were injured, but I'm not sure his concern prior to the season was a lack of first graders?
Add to that list some impressively talented youngsters like Erin Clark (who left); Manaia Cherrington (who came in halfway through); Bunty Afoa (etc).

Playing roster strength is very far from the issue at the Warriors Pou.... Seems like you're just making (false) excuses for your man-crush (again). Not sure what excuses are needed for him? Shouldn't we be celebrating a successful season?? He got a career high 7 wins this year, boosting his winning % to 25.8%. Really, a couple more 7 win seasons and he'll be up over 27%.

You need to ask why they keep failing. They haven't made the finals since 2011 despite all these stars. Blaming coaches is a cop out.

Tohu Harris is an 80 minute high impact player who defends well, kicks goals and has utility value. If he is a leader as well then $1M is a fair price over the coming years, given the rising salary cap.

I don't think they will "explode" as you put it. Brodie Croft is a star in the making and that Brandon Smih is a decent looking hooker himself. If he wasn't at Storm I'd safely say he would've racked up a decent amount of games this year already. Then they have that Jahrome Hughes as a replacement at fullback who did a fair job while billy was on Origin duty/rested. I think they will be right

I reckon an 80 minute edge forward is worth as much as your less important spine players. Add tax for goalkicking, leadership and having to go to a non-competitive team, and $1M is unsurprising. I wouldn't call it overs. Cordner would be on close to $1M next year IMO.

Travel wouldnt help.... International airport is painfull. They lose a day each time come here.

I don't think the club will explode but if you take 900 games experience out of any club plus 3 very good players still playing very good football any club will dip in performance. But forever always having a backup plan, Bellamy has 3 good players to replace them. Storm will dip in performance but if the majority of the squad stay together can still see them playing in the finals but perhaps not challenging for the title.

Look at Storm and compare them with other clubs. Most other clubs lose 2-3 good players and their performance suffers for several years until they are replaced. Storm already have their replacement players. Look at Parra, BA came in after 2 shit years and it took him 4 years to get to the finals (or 3 years if you count last year) but we have been in the wilderness for 8 long years with a combination of shit rosters, coaches and boards.

Most clubs are reactive with their rosters, only buying replacement players after existing player gone, whereas Storm proactive already having replacements available.

I believe storm will cope when the big 3 eventually retire. It is the departure of Bellamy that will be the change. The club will eventually lose the ethos/culture that he built over time. Good example look at the dogs of war.
More like waving the white flag now.

Smith will be by far their biggest loss, you only have to see how they got pumped 40 nil in the 08 GF to see the difference without him.

He's easily the best player of his generation and the most irreplaceable.
