As a halfback, clubs would be throwing money at Dargan if was anywhere near ready for an NRL spot next year.

And by playing a fair bit of NSW cup, clubs would have had a good chance to see how he goes.

Obviously has potential but probably needs time, as is reflected in that he isn't already signed up by another club.

It may also be a case of not wanting to be 4th string half. There is probably a back up half spot available somewhere

Who says he is 4th string? He could be first back up. Who knows until he starts playing next year.

At this stage Smith, is our 3rd string fullback, halves and hooker back up for next year - obviously he can't cover all those spots if there is injuries.

Of course I am sure there will be more signings to provide cover.

He is the "backup" half, however it'd probably depend how long hypothetically Normzie/Moses is out. A short term injury would probably just see Gunco shift into halves because our backup outside back is probably a better option than Dargan. Then again if it's just for one game BA may just throw Dargan in to give him taste and conversely if it's a season ending injury he may just completely alter the lineup to allow Gunco and the uninjured half gelling time.
If one of our halves went down now, I'd say Edwards would move into halves and if French gets back, Smith to bench
