So why even have a coach at all?
So why release some players and sign new ones?
Defence is technique and attitude and its the coach's job to improve both.
It is, but how much can be improved in the space of a season? How much can be improved in a handful of seasons? How much in the space of a player's NRL career?
I think the amount of improvement possible through coaching is far less important than the quality of the players to start with. It means that if you can sign a better player at value at contract you do that rather than trying to improve a sub-par player by another 2% or whatever the number is.
Saying he had weak cattle when all were paid as NRL players is difficult to understand.
Except Pay has now pulled a head coaching spot despite being the defensive coach at a couple of shitty defensive sides.
Some would imply that his record means he's a shitty defensive coach. the way I see it his teams would have been even worse without him.
Obviously this is why we punted Gentle.
Is it? It could be that we want to bring in some new blood rather than being complacent. It might just be that another club offered him more than we wanted to pay.
Maybe we should have concluded the players we have just cant do the job required and punt them not the coach.
The players finished top four. So did Pete Gentle. I don't think much can be drawn from our results other than that the players and assistant coach were all obviously good enough this year. Yet we are still losing Gentle and at least one of the players.
