Well firstly, I was also talking about the struggling gay kids who see their hero say that ABOUT THEM, not just the people who might follow in his footsteps. The influence of this kind of thing can go a lot of different ways.

How do you think homophobes are created? Or racists? Or PETA activists?

It's usually a series of influences, parents, media, heroes that shape a lot of what we think and how we act. Folau's words alone won't make a homophobe, but they could contribute to an idea that becomes homophobia with other influences. Little Billy McRuggerFan thinks that these gays must be bad if Izzy Bloody Folau thinks they go to Hell, and that helps make little Billy more receptive to homophobic ideas.
And what if Little Billy McTwitterJunkie saw the response to Folau's tweet and decided that unpopular ideas were violence and they should be silenced and punished? What kind of world would Little Billy and his mates grow up to create?

That’s his and their right.

We don’t have the right to say that all the ideas that are in fashion now are the only correct ones, and any contrary ideas from the past or future should be kept hidden.

We actually do. There can be no change without dissent, so to speak. And there must always be change, subtle or otherwise.

I've not once said Folau can't be a homophobe if he wants. He can, and we can call him on it and if it costs him his job that's his problem for being the kind of dullard who can be brainwashed into that sort of belief. But people in his position airing those divisive, hate-based views is undoubtedly not the right way to go.

Why do you care so much about what some footy player thinks?

Just shake your head and move on. So many more important things to worry about than a rugby player saying homo's will burn in some imaginary place when they perish... Get angry about homelessness, or Australian livestock being transported inhumanely across the globe to satisfy the culinary tastes of another band of religious freaks... That's real shit, not a throwaway line on social media...

I can get angry over more than one thing.
And if it was just one rugby player saying shit like this, then I would just call him an idiot and move on.
But it's not just him. It's quite a lot of people, millions worldwide, who think this stuff. If everyone is just going to turn a blind eye and say they can think what they like then how is anything going to change?

Most national companies have social media policies that state that once you leave the workplace for the day your responsibilities to the brand that employs you does not cease until the next morning. It’s 24/7.

I know for instance Coles has a strict policy that if you list on social media that you work for them, every post you make is taken on board as a reflection of the business, is in other words if you wanna be a homophobic/racist/moron/ass, then don’t let people know you work for us.

Folau doesn’t have that level of discretion as everyone in the country knows who he works for, so he needs to be aware of his responsibilities. I don’t think he should have been disciplined in the first instance, but I believe if I does something similar again it would be grounds for some sort of breach.

I don't roll with this whole 'everyone is entitled to their beliefs' bullshit.

If Izzy came out and said that all Asian people should rot in hell, he would quite rightly be ostracised and sacked.
But because it's homosexuals, "Well, I don't like it but he's entitled to say what he wants."

f**k that. This world needs to move forward into a time when everyone is treated equally, no matter who they want to have sex with, and allowing people to get away with saying shit like this is not helping.
I don't give a f**k what religion he is. Religion is holding the world back.

Izzy can rot in hell himself.

Sport, politics and religion should never be mixed. But, they all can't help themselves.

There's not always a solution for stupid, unfortunately. And if that was the idea you got from seeing people speaking out against bigotry then you are undeniably stupid.

And hey, maybe Little Billy McRuggerFan and Little Billy McTwitterJunkie are both destined to head down that path anyway. Like I said, there's no cure for the dumb. But there is also no denying that our influences shape the people we become. Although I'm sure you'll try and tell me there is

But saying his ideas are invalid is just as hateful. Pressuring a sponsor to sack him marginalises people who peacefully hold those views. Nobody burns witches or jails homosexuals any more. Why should people with religious beliefs have to hide them?

Things have already changed. We learnt to tolerate different ideas a long time ago, back when most of the Western world was religious. Intolerance of ideas is now making a rapid comeback and it leads to dark places.

Your mistake is assuming that detrimental ideas need to be tolerated....

It's about changing the mindset of people who believe this shit.
I don't care how long the bible has been about. We are now living in a modern world and we need to have modern beliefs. It wasn't too long ago that people believed that black people were inferior to whites. Things change. It is people stuck in this mindset that are trying to drag us back into the dark ages.

This is about people. Human beings that live among us who have done no wrong. Not a book from a couple thousand years ago.
typical attitude of a SJW

you're just as bad as Folau

Are all changes good? Bigots prob also prefer to see less imigrants and refugees.
Just like boat people. Higher population, wage growth stalls, property prices rise. Your quality of life suddenly is not as good.

Look at world travel, sure its great seeing the world but also why flus and bugs spread from one country too another within 24hrs.

you're just as bad Folau

You must have been so torn on this issue....on the one hand, your abject hatred of RU, and on the other, your desire to support a fellow homophobe...

So as soon as we disagree with something it is 'bigotry' (or 'fascism') and free to be attacked? If you don't see what's happening here you're as stupid as I am.

Which is fine but tyranny of the majority is a populist, not a democratic idea. It also should be resisted given the horrors of the previous century.

Immigrants bring an influx of culture, skills and ideas. Didn't you say your folks came out on a boat ffs??

World travel brings knowledge. And if you want to talk about viruses, you better have done more than primary school science.

But it's none of your f**king business. Thinking you have a right to change them makes you exactly like them.

People still believe it which is why we have a push for diversity laws. Because of the idea that some minority groups can't succeed without help.

They're not trying to drag anyone anywhere. You have your beliefs, they have theirs.

Who decides right and wrong though? That book is a big part of why our secular laws are different to the secular laws in other parts of the world.

I know I'm not going to change his/their thinking. That's not going to happen. What can happen is a change in the next generation, but that will only happen if we call out people like Izzy.

Who decides right and wrong? That's a good question. Of course those with the beliefs that tie in with bigotry would believe they are right. A great many of our current laws have probably originated from religion I'm sure (is the 5th commandment the first instance of a law against killing?), so religion has played a part in deciding what is right or wrong.
In these more modern times where we are moving even further away from leaning on the bible for our laws and lessons in life, we look to a moral compass. I guess the majority who have the same moral compass get to write the laws.

So, in short....I decide what's right and wrong, merkin!

And before that we didn't. I'm sure we can agree that burning people to death is very different from saying they are doing wrong.

We have changed. We came to grips with the idea that we can disagree with other people's choices and opinions without burning them to death or having them blacklisted from earning an income. The Yanks left that behind in the 50s.

He can earn an income.
Just maybe not one that relies on sponsorship and fan dollars to keep in business.

If you can point out where I said that, I would grateful.

You can't, though. That's the problem with inferring things that were never said.

Homophobia is bigotry. Not because I "disagree" or whatever ludicrous horseshit you want to spin. Because that's what bigotry is. Racism is also bigotry. It has absolutely nothing to do with what I agree with.
