I think merkins underestimate just how much some merkins get paid.

Half the merkins in any squad would be on less than $150k, meaning the remaining 15 or so would average about $500k each. Your top three players could be on $3M combined and the next highest paid dozen would all be on $350k+

It might be ideal to have your top three paid players in the spine, but there aren't enough high quality spine players in the world for every team to spread their cap that way. Other clubs will be paying a lot of money for other high involvement players (e.g. 80 minute forwards or wingers who make 20 carries each week). Leadership adds a premium to any contract, especially for clubs looking to improve in that area. Graham isn't worth a million but he's not far off. And most clubs need to pay overs at a couple of positions they desperately need. This might include a halfback, an attacking middle forward or an experienced leader. These guys all make a difference.

I recall seeing a random street test on chocolate and merkins were given AU, USA, SWZ chocolates. Overwhelmingly Aussies liked AU best, the yanks liked theirs as did the Swiss.

Cadbury is my favourite by the length of the straight. Fancy chocolate sucks, although Whittakers isn't bad. I suspect it is the NZ version of Cadbury though.
