Most people expected Evans to be in the 17 didnt they? I thought he’d be more than just a back up. He’s not a world beater but he was solid enough for the Roosters the previous year.

At first, I thought it was injuries that was keeping him in reserves but when he stayed there I had to reassess. Was he worse than I remembered when he played for the Roosters or has he not shown the right attitude since coming here?

How does he go from being good enough to be in the 17 of a winning squad to not making the 17 of a losing squad in less than a year?

Maybe I overrated him like BA. But if so, doesn’t that mean that the Roosters did as well?

Or did BA immediately turn him into a f**k tard?

It’s one of the two.

I know which one El D will choose.

I'm pretty certain Evans was bought with the intent of him being top seventeen, based upon all the talk of body shape ( height ) that he brought to the club, and the fact he had played enough games the year before to indicate he was a genuine first grader.

That doesn't make him worth a motza, but no way he was signed on minimum either, I would have thought somewhere around 250k give or take if I had to have a guess.

I already said I revised my opinion after he was dropped. That doesn't happen to genuine top 17 players, no matter how poorly they're playing. Jennings was 'dropped' during the bye and never missed an NRL game last year.

As for already having the information, I never paid any attention to the specific language in the Evans signing announcement. I only found that article because I was looking for another article that appeared last year where Evans (I think it was) admitted that he was bought for depth. That doesn't mean he's a backup, but it also doesn't mean he has a guaranteed spot in the top 17.

I'm sure the club hoped he would step up and own a spot in the team but they obviously weren't relying on it. We had Mannah, Scott, Brown and Alvaro plus Matagi (signed after a 23 game season at Penrith), Vave (signed after a 23 game season at Manly) and Terepo. Evans made eight middle forwards. Plus Moeroa joins the middle rotation after starting on the edge. Evans was part of the depth rotation with Matagi/Vave/Terepo.
Kenny Edwards would have been very close to our top 10 paid players being in his second year of a three year contract, particularly having extended after a strong 2016.

He was dropped for the opening two games of this season so your theory of genuine top 17 players not getting dropped is rubbish.

I’m certain coaches select teams based on who they think are most likely to
Win the game, not what they earn.

If you have a bunch of players (especially middle forwards) who spend time between first grade and reserve grade (Matagi, Vave, Terepo, Evans) then they can’t all be top 17. Most likely is that there isn’t a clear top 17, instead there is something like a top dozen or so, followed by another eight to ten vying for the remaining spots.

Sure it might be ideal having a clear top 17 plus 13 backups in the squad (as long as nobody ever got injured) but then there would be no space in the game for players like Terepo, Evans or Zane Tetevano.

Matagi played 49 NRL games over 2016-17 for two clubs, but do you really think he was on ‘top 17 money’ for either of them? He would’ve been on little more than backup money. Every club would have middle forwards like this who could play 20+ games but are cheap enough that they’re easy to drop for some merkin of similar ability.

I’m fairly certain Evans is in our top 20 paid players but I’d say players 15-20 would all be on about the same amount. I’m sure he’s in more than Stone and Kaufusi, but he wasn’t a big money signing like Paulo.

Jnr is on close too 700 odd.
When we first signed Evan I was excited. I guessed around 350k. But would of BA dropped him for Matagi after 4 games if he was the one who asked the club to sign him? Id dare say he would of looked stupid. My guess now would be 200-250k.

Guys like Kafusi I dare say already are on more then MIN. He is a big kid, played lots of rep sides in the juniors. There would be plenty of clauses in his contract for extras.

I'd say he'd be very close to our top 10, if not in it. Even highly paid players get dropped, especially when a club has a start like we did. You had the same opinion before he got dropped. How shit he's been since joining us wouldn't even be a story if he was signed as a fringe player. All signs point to him being overpaid.

He was dropped after 4 games though. Plenty others where firing. It was when Terepo 3 game ban was ended and then had 1 run under belt for Wenty.

KE had the whole off field dramas. I think club was ready to cut ties with him by start of 18. If KE was part of squad now I am unsure he gets a top 17 spot.

When we signed him I was excited. Then I talked to Mick. His response was this-
He is f**king hopeless. Makes 1 or 2 good charges all game then does a silly passes and gives away ball and gives away dumb penalties. I have to say. MICK nailed it.

Now ive just fired him a txt asking about S.Lane. waiting a response.

Huh? He was re-signed at the end of 2016, which was after the drug testing and common assault incidents. He had a strong year in 2017 in a season we were top 4. The DUI incident didn’t happen until mid April 2018, well after the the start of the season. Why would the club be ready to cut ties with him?

I also reckon if Edwards is still with us we’re not that interested in Lane.

There is a third option though. Evans was useful enough playing a 20-25 minute role in a very strong squad. We over estimated his ability to play longer minutes in a far worse pack.

In this scenario, the Roosters didn’t overrate him at all...and we did.

I reckon BA saw a guy he could turn into a top shelf prop. But when he come his attitude was not what he expected and reason why he dropped him.
He would of seen good old Terepo tearing it up at training and gave him his chance.

So he's bad enough to play for the roosters but not good enough to play for Parramatta?
