Arthur told him he had a lot to work on. If that’s how he saw him we surely didn’t pay top dollar.
Based on last year, he sure does have a lot to work on. What does that have to do with the amount we signed him for in 2017 when he was with the Roosters?

Do you think he didn’t have things to work on when we signed him? Or we just never saw him play?
I think Paulo has things to work on and he’s on a motza. What’s that got to do with anything?

I’d say BA thinks Evans needs to work on more having watched him play in 2018 than when we signed him playing a 25 minute bench role at the Roosters.

Is it so hard to conceive that BA overrated Evans when he signed him?

Yep Terepo was the only one. Matagi played the opening two games of the year and was then dropped. Evans lasted a bit longer so I’d argue he was higher in the pecking order at the time.
If you have a bunch of players (especially middle forwards) who spend time between first grade and reserve grade (Matagi, Vave, Terepo, Evans) then they can’t all be top 17. Most likely is that there isn’t a clear top 17, instead there is something like a top dozen or so, followed by another eight to ten vying for the remaining spots.

Sure it might be ideal having a clear top 17 plus 13 backups in the squad (as long as nobody ever got injured) but then there would be no space in the game for players like Terepo, Evans or Zane Tetevano.

Matagi played 49 NRL games over 2016-17 for two clubs, but do you really think he was on ‘top 17 money’ for either of them? He would’ve been on little more than backup money. Every club would have middle forwards like this who could play 20+ games but are cheap enough that they’re easy to drop for some merkin of similar ability.

I’m fairly certain Evans is in our top 20 paid players but I’d say players 15-20 would all be on about the same amount. I’m sure he’s in more than Stone and Kaufusi, but he wasn’t a big money signing like Paulo.

It is actually. He wouldn’t have known his character but there is enough video and statistical data available that they know what players can do.

So we lured a regular first grader from one of the big-spending successful clubs, and managed to do that on fringe player money? Doesn't seem likely.

We only had to offer more than the Roosters. If they offered nothing how much would we have needed to offer?
We not only had to offer more than the Roosters, we had to offer more than the 14 other clubs. And maybe ESL too. And a regular first grader at the chooks is bound to be attractive to plenty of teams. And there's no good reason to think a middle forward of his age, playing regular first grade, would not be offered anything by his club. Haven't heard a peep from him or anyone suggesting that.

Like I said, he'd be on more than players 21-30. I just doubt players 21-30 are on much more than minimum salary. Players 11-20 are even likely to be on less than the NRL mean salary of ~$300k. No way would Evans be in our top ten paid players. It would be the merkins who never get dropped:

Alvaro
Brown
Gutherson
Jennings
Mannah
Ma'u
Moeroa
Moses
Paulo
Takairangi

I'd say he'd be very close to our top 10, if not in it. Even highly paid players get dropped, especially when a club has a start like we did. You had the same opinion before he got dropped. How shit he's been since joining us wouldn't even be a story if he was signed as a fringe player. All signs point to him being overpaid.

He spent more of the year in reserve grade than out of it. We had plenty of poor performers last year but most of them were too valuable to play reserve grade. Evans was not one of these.

No, before he got dropped I thought he was one of our better earners. The player has height, speed and power. The fact he spent so long in reserve grade proved the club actually didn't rate him that highly. For a player to spend half the season in reserve grade means it was always a possibility. In that case his price would reflect it.

I'm sure he's on more than he was on at the Roosters but he would've been on f**k all at the Roosters. We joke about their salary cap but I reckon a club like that probably has less than 15 players on more than about $150k. Of course Evans is overpaid while he's playing reserve grade. So are Terepo and Hoffman. But if they're not automatic top 17 selections they would be on less than $300k, probably a lot less. Demand drives their price, not how many games they've played. We heard this from Corey Parker when he was pissing and moaning about the Broncos' offer. He played for Queensland and Australia in his final season and no club was offering much for him to go around in 2017.

But you've previously stated that Evans was brought as top 17. And even that admission came after a number of weeks playing reserve grade.
After enough reserve grade I re-assessed. He was bought to provide depth in the forwards, as stated in the official announcement in 2017:
“We’re excited to add more depth to our forward pack; Kane’s size and aggression adds another dimension to our playing squad for next season,” said Head Coach Brad Arthur.

I already said I revised my opinion after he was dropped. That doesn't happen to genuine top 17 players, no matter how poorly they're playing. Jennings was 'dropped' during the bye and never missed an NRL game last year.

As for already having the information, I never paid any attention to the specific language in the Evans signing announcement. I only found that article because I was looking for another article that appeared last year where Evans (I think it was) admitted that he was bought for depth. That doesn't mean he's a backup, but it also doesn't mean he has a guaranteed spot in the top 17.

I'm sure the club hoped he would step up and own a spot in the team but they obviously weren't relying on it. We had Mannah, Scott, Brown and Alvaro plus Matagi (signed after a 23 game season at Penrith), Vave (signed after a 23 game season at Manly) and Terepo. Evans made eight middle forwards. Plus Moeroa joins the middle rotation after starting on the edge. Evans was part of the depth rotation with Matagi/Vave/Terepo.
