There's a salary cap, and we couldn't afford to pay that much for a depth player. The fact that he is on around $300-350k. if you think he is on anything less you have rocks in your head.

Exactly. Paying Evans $50k more than he's worth is nothing compared to paying an extra couple hundred for somebody else. TPAs at other clubs mean clubs like Parra have to pay overs. What is he worth and what was he paid? In all seriousness he is still worth 150- 200k. And if we took a gamble and paid him closer to 300k hoping he produced more so f**king what. Its bugger all.We needed a big man. Now we had to throw 700k at Jnr. Isn't that a bigger concern?
Like all the other pretty useful players we brought into 2018.Of cause the other option regarding Evans is that he was a pretty useful player who we managed to turn to s"*t.
You can always get real quality if you pay for it. We chose Evans to add depth to the squad because he didn't cost much. This year we paid big for Paulo.Yes you overrated him like BA and others here did. Height isn't the only thing that matters, he has twig calves. BA was desperate to get a different shape into the squad as he had stated. He couldn't get real quality and settled on Evans. I was never really excited by his signing and always thought that it could turn out the way it has so far.
They also didn't sack their coach after two straight wooden spoons. Having a reputation for knee-jerk sacking of coaches means you get coaches looking for the quick fix.Newcastle had little bargaining power after 3 straight wooden spoons - but they are now gaining momentum.
They bid thier time and threw a bunch of jnrs in to begin with.
They bought slowly and diligently with Ponga, Pearce, Ramian,Watson and Klemmer. Now they have a young and stable lineup on which they can further build upon to become a regular top 8 force.
We on the other hand purchased quick fix players such as Evans, Matagi, Watmough, Vave, Williams, Frichard ect ect.
I know which club has the stonger roster atm and it definitely had nothing to do with bargaining power.
It's called putting the club before your own self interests.
Evans was announced as a depth signing:Those Newcastle players that i mentioned are either at the top of their game, or are undeniable future superstars.
Evans and Hoffman on the other hand were below average players.
That's the difference
Newcastle a one team town ? But almost went bankrupt very recently, and don't have a very rich league's club backing them.

https://www.parraeels.com.au/news/2016/10/11/eels-sign-hoffman-on-three-year-deal/“Josh brings tremendous NRL experience and can play anywhere from 1 to 6 which ensures our squad will have strong competition across multiple positions,” Arthur said.
He was equal to Tetevano who got the nod because he was the one who would be at the club the next year. Anyway, Evans played in the final the week before when they won. A week later they dropped him and lost.Roosters dropped him for their finals (and final) game so they already assessed him as not being good enough for their top 17.
Why would we need him to play long minutes? We have plenty of forwards who can play long minutes at high intensity.
I'm sure we knew we had a worse pack than the Roosters, and we also knew how many minutes Evans had been playing through his career.
So we decided he wasn't good enough for a shit team? Instead he was only good enough for a strong team? Makes sense.
He wasn’t good enough for the Roosters either by the end of 2017

So his fitness was the problem. As we know, players build their fitness base in the pre-season and the disrupted pre-season certainly interfered with that.“I was averaging 25 minutes at the Roosters, and the coach has told me he wants me to play at least 40 minutes, so that’s the goal. I also have a personal goal to start."

Lost ability or punished for signing elsewhere? He wasn’t good enough for the Roosters either by the end of 2017
FFS...even Will Smith managed a good game every once in a while. Doesn’t make him a genuine first grader. You need to be putting up solid performers consistently to warrant that title. And yet, in his best performance he played 46 minutes.
Not at Parramatta.FFS...even Will Smith managed a good game every once in a while. Doesn’t make him a genuine first grader. You need to be putting up solid performers consistently to warrant that title.
signing with Parramatta is already a punishmentLost ability or punished for signing elsewhere?
It wasn’t the final year of his contract. He was contracted until the end of 2019. He didn’t start the season in 2018 because BA thought there were better options. He was wrong, but it does highlight that he is prepared to drop players that are on definite top 17 money.Edwards was a discipline case, and someone we were trying to push out of the club in the final year of his contract.
Their earnings indicate their ability, and teams are picked on ability not form.
It wasn't any given incident that rissoled Edwards, it was the review pointing out that he's more trouble than he's worth.
In this interview from 13/12/2017 he states that he just started doing weights and had already started running, just six and a half weeks after he broke his arm. He had a further three months to get fit before our first game. Three months ffs!!So his fitness was the problem. As we know, players build their fitness base in the pre-season and the disrupted pre-season certainly interfered with that.
He did play 46 minutes against the Dragons when he came back into the side though, so he's obviously capable of it. Anyone can play longer minutes just by reducing their involvement (pacing themselves).
History tells us that plenty of players that come out of the storm system looked shit hot down there and bog average elsewhere. How is this any different? So we decided he wasn't good enough for a shit team? Instead he was only good enough for a strong team? Makes sense.
