FFS...even Will Smith managed a good game every once in a while. Doesn’t make him a genuine first grader. You need to be putting up solid performers consistently to warrant that title.
In 2015 and '16 he was a solid first grader: https://www.nrl.com/players/nrl-premiership/eels/kane-evans/

He was injured early in 2017: https://www.roosters.com.au/news/2017/03/21/injury-report--round-4/ and his form went downhill. Then he broke his arm in the World Cup before coming to Parra. I'd say he is probably easily led and the poor influences at Parra last year were the worst thing for him. A more determined player wouldn't have allowed injuries to set him back so far.

In this interview from 13/12/2017 he states that he just started doing weights and had already started running, just six and a half weeks after he broke his arm. He had a further three months to get fit before our first game. Three months ffs!!

https://www.parraeels.com.au/news/2017/12/13/evans-an-opportunity-was-all-i-needed/

To be fair, what sort of weights? Full workouts? Full range of motion? Were they, at that stage, remedial weights aimed at rebuilding him to the level he was prior? Or were they full weight workouts designed for fitness/strength/bulk? Plus, weights do not equal match fitness. So was he doing contact? Tackling?

Without all the information, it's no more correct to argue he was fully fit than to argue he wasn't. And as is usually the case with such arguments, I'd say the truth is likely in the middle. Fitness was part of the issue, on top of others.

And like I said I'm not fussed on Evans either way, but the same arguments with the same points are pretty pointless IMO.

Aren’t you now contradicting yourself? So if he was a solid first grader as you say in 2015 and 2016 at the age of 23 and 24, and props tend to peak a bit later, why wouldn’t he expect to get top 17 money coming to a different club when he will be aged 26, 27 and 28?

Even if he wasn't in the best possible shape for the very first game, it's a bit of a stretch to claim that a broken arm suffered the year before is the reason he wasn't fit for the majority of the season.

Do you ever tire of being wrong???

It wasn’t the final year of his contract. He was contracted until the end of 2019. He didn’t start the season in 2018 because BA thought there were better options. He was wrong, but it does highlight that he is prepared to drop players that are on definite top 17 money.

Actually, there was a final incident that broke the camel’s back, but I accept it was the cumulative impact from his off field behaviour.

Edwards was also punted in May, two months prior to the football department review.

Fair point about the review timing. I don't actually find it interesting so I'm unsurprised I didn't remember exactly when it occurred. The fact remains Edwards has been a pain in the arse and was obviously on the way out. And Takairangi (a genuine top 17 player for us who has never played for Wenty) took Edwards' edge forward spot to start the year. Edwards only came into the side after Takairangi was injured against Manly.

There were other injuries in the pre-season:
“I’ve been going crap,” Evans said. “I don’t think I’ve been up to standard coming off injury from the World Cup and a few little injuries in pre-season. I definitely need to work on my fitness and I’ll be doing that in the next couple of weeks.

I agree to an extent, but it's also not too far fetched to suggest he started behind the eight-ball, and then when he got injured again it basically blew his fitness for a big chunk of the season. Especially as someone who was intending to increase his game time by almost 100%

There were no doubt other issues though. I just think Kane Evans is hardly worth all the attention he gets on here. He's hardly the watershed in the anti-BA movement some other posters hold him up to be.

That’s not obvious at all. I’m sure he was on his last chance but it’s a giant leap to suggest a guy midway through his contract was on the way out, just because it suits your argument.

They also didn't sack their coach after two straight wooden spoons. Having a reputation for knee-jerk sacking of coaches means you get coaches looking for the quick fix.

I am not convinced that Knights will be great. Ponga is an ace but unless they upgrade him I reckon noises will start. Klemmer isnt worth the money they paid.
870k a season. 200k more then Jnr cost and an extra year on contract.
Pearce turns 30 in April. Not old for a half but what will his form be like? Watson looks a bust.
Knights showed improvement in 2018 but there differential was still worse in comp. They copped a lot of floggings. I still think they where the worse side in 2018. I think a lot of teams took games against them for granted and where caught by suprise. That wont be happening this season.

Guerra,Buhrer,Glasby,SKD,Edrick Lee,K.Mann,Watson are hardly anything to get excited about.

Ramien looks promising. Pearce was a solid signing. Klemmer was paid overs.

They struck a winner in Ponga. Lets see how good he is after teams have 1yr worth of tape. 700k for a rookieagain was a gamble.

Newcastle have the better platform moving forward, that's what counts.

Ill say confidently they will finish within the 8 for the next 3 years at least. Im not confident about us finished in the 8 this year, but stranger things have happened..
