If you have a contract with 600k in bonuses you are either a) in serious trouble of breaching the cap if he hits all those marks or b) leaving 600k unused in your cap if he doesn't hit those marks

Actually it doesn't necessarily work like that.........

• Other bonuses – Any other bonus contained in a player's contract will be calculated in the Salary Cap if the NRL Salary Cap Auditor expects him to achieve the bonus based on his prior year's performance.

So in the example given, they probably wouldn't be counted, because none of those benchmarks were made last year, however.............

Note: Where a bonus is achieved by a player but was not assessed in the player's Salary Cap Value, the bonus is carried forward and calculated in the player's Salary Cap Value for the following year.

Which means that provided we didn't make the finals we'd be sweet. Yay!

But if we did, he'd be costed at 1.6 million the following year. Derp!

Unless that third year had a significant pay jump, why would he bother? If he hit those targets, he’d be better off going to market
