Rumours and Stuff

So I'll answer my own question. When he was with us he was shit. And now Bellamy has turned him good. I only raise this because his name was mentioned a page back as a potential forward recruit to provide leadership and mongrel.

He wasn’t shit. He had potential which anybody could see. But dickhead coaches prefer the likes of Gower and Alvaro etc.

Guys, Cannavaro won the Balon d'or playing as a centre back, people quickly forget how good he was.

Go and watch how good he was during the 06 world cup, easily the best defender I've ever seen.

Nesta wasn't far behind him either and got injured in the group stages of the 06 world cup, Materazzi came in and played alongside Cannavaro and suddenly turned into a superstar.

Cannavaro made everyone around him look good, he could play out and read the game better then any defender I have seen.

True - Cannavaro was a superstar.

I guess if there is any club who could afford to offer him $1.5m per year it’s us. Not holding my breath but.

THERE is much interest in Kalyn Ponga’s next NRL contract with Brisbane and Parramatta rumoured to have him under notice.

Ponga is the third-highest paid player at the Knights behind halfback Mitchell Pearce and front-row enforcer Dave Klemmer but is clearly their biggest star and best player.

He is under contract until 2021 but it hasn’t stopped clubs from making early inquiries, which is perfectly legal. Ponga will become a $6 million player over five years with his next contract.

It’s interesting that Ponga’s father — and not his manager Wayde Rushton — has been the one driving the early contract renewal talks with the Knights.

Just listening to the Dragons v Sharks game while cooking the bbq, and then hearing Xerri get interviewed after scoring his hattrick.... And it got me thinking about much hyped youngsters and the ones that actually deliver... Ponga is obviously delivering everything and more than was anticipated by the Knights. Xerri is fitting in to first grade seamlessly and looks a star already. Turbo and Jake at Manly have justified the hype around them. RTS another example...

On the flip side, there's been plenty of Parra youngsters talked up prior to making NRL debut but none have or are delivering. The likes of Moeroa, Kris Keating, Loko. I heard all about these prodigies and how they were rep stars of the future but for different reasons they delivered bugger all... Hayne the outlier but even he f**ked up his career....

All part of a broader conversation on promoting the right juniors, but we also can't miss the boat on some of the other gun talents elsewhere. As it stands, the Knights pretty much hit the jackpot with Ponga. I'd like to see us buy a few more lottery tickets from other sellers around the place and not just stick to the same newsagent in Parra if you catch my drift.... And I know we are trying, but I'd love to see us produce or poach someone special again. We're overdue IMO...
A few years ago during Bennett's tenure the Broncos cherry picked promising juniors from other club's nurseries and some have delivered (none from Parra to my knowledge). We need to do the same and hopefully will jag a few decent players.

Every year, so it seems, we have promising juniors yet none deliver. Even the much touted Kaufusi (who has rep experience) has glaring deficiencies particularly in defence. The Broncos juniors, as an example, seem ready to play NRL at a young age. And there are multiple examples of other clubs young players coming into their NRL side and playing to a high standard. So where are we falling down?

Be surprised if he left Knights, maybe later in his career if he wants a premiership, Can see him playing in a higher profile team when about 26. Doubt we'll be that high profile team by then with BA still our coach.

The Broncos are ordinary this year precisely because of their young forwards. Obviously Haas is the exception.

Coaching. Pure and simple. Many of these kids have courage and natural skill so whats missing?
Kidwell, Murphy and Grima are also paid to develop juniors. A huge fear is that much potential will not receive the development they require. Would love to be proved wrong though. Maybe with Rip Taylor on board its a start.
