Restriction of trade gets thrown around way too much. A salary cap is a part of collective bargaining agreement by players association, its not a restriction of trade.

Fair enough, but I bet if the players association didn't like it and fought it they would have a very good chance of winning.

Not on the basis of a restraint of trade they wouldn’t. No player is restricted from plying their trade other than those restrictions under normal employment circumstances I.e they can’t go work at Coles at the same time they are playing. If you or I did that, we’d similarly be in breach of our employment contract. Also a capping on earnings potential from employment isn’t a restraint of trade, particularly one ratified by a CBA and particularly when it’s capped to a larger than average economy. Does the players association also have voting rights on the NRL? The players argument is on fair revenue share not restraint of trade.

It is true that the existence of salary cap does not (and cannot) constitute a restraint of trade in itself. The existence of a salary cap can influence the likelihood that another clause (such as the introduction of a 'draft') will be deemed an 'unreasonable' restraint of trade though.

Only very marginally or within specific circumstances. Although the working draft systems are also far more “reasonable” in players favour to sway away from whingeing of restraint

Emma Laurence said on 2MMM that Jessie signed very early with Knights. After that his form at the Sharks improved and his Dad called the Knights saying that they wanted more money. Knights told him to get f**ked. Jessie's Dad was pissed. Then Jessie finds himself on the right but Pearce and Ponga attack mostly on the left. Jessie is pissed and confronts the coach seeking early ball. Coach says we'll do our best. A few weeks later Jessie is still unhappy and Jessie's Dad is hanging around. Nek minute Knights coach finds out that Dad has been ringing other clubs asking if Sharks want him back and offering to others. Coach is over it. Rest is history.

Source? Otherwise I will have to report you to the mods.

Yeh, that's why I said 'can' rather than 'will'. A draft (like the failed NSWRL internal draft) that impacts the rights of 'out of contract' players in an environment with a tight salary cap is less likely to stand up that one with no cap or a very liberal cap.

Gutho sent CW a nice text message. Blah blah blah

As revealed by foxsports.com.au in NRL Scout, Welch has activated a one-year contract clause in his favour at Melbourne, meaning his employment in 2020 is guaranteed.

But he’s been in discussions with the Eels, among other clubs, to potentially jump ship before next season.

Now facing the possibility of being unable to play football for most of 2020, Welch suddenly finds himself in an awkward contract limbo.

But there remains a strong chance he and Gutherson could be teammates at some stage soon.

Api K is seeking $500k per season :flushed:

KOROISAU WEIGHING UP $1.5M FUTURE

Premiership-winning hooker Api Koroisau has a $1.5 million decision to make on his rugby league future.

Foxsports.com.au can reveal the race to Koroisau’s signature is down to two NRL clubs - the Warriors and Bulldogs.

The diminutive rake is contracted to Manly until the end of 2021 on a deal worth almost $1 million over the next two years.

But the Sea Eagles have given him permission to negotiate with rivals and he looks almost certain to leave the northern beaches at season’s end.

EELS’ BATTLE FOR HOFFMAN

Parramatta have tabled an offer to keep Josh Hoffman, but they may have a fight on their hands.

The versatile outside back has played 10 games and scored five tries this season, as the Eels have shot up the ladder to occupy sixth spot.

Hoffman has often found himself playing at centre this year and despite the Eels’ rising stock, he is said to be tempted to return home to Queensland.

His former club, the Broncos, are well-stocked in the outside backs, while the Cowboys have a number of players off contract.

The Titans would perhaps be the most likely of destinations given the under-fire roster is lacking experience, especially in the outside backs.

Brenko Lee, Jesse Arthars and Michael Gordon are all departing the club, meaning the Titans have cap space and need strong defenders out wide if they are to avoid back-to-back wooden spoons.

Hoffman played 49 games at Robina, not missing a single fixture before being shunted out to make room for Jarryd Hayne in 2017.

I like Hoffman but if the Titans are looking for "strong defenders out wide" then they are looking in the wrong place.
Hoff is strong in the 1 2 3 4 5 positions. Worth every cent of his (guessing) $200k.

He's strong in attack. His defence is not. Misses too many tackles. And if he goes back to the Titans it will be for more than what we are offering.

Hoffman is pretty solid by outside back standards.

Not great but better than lots of others
Hoff has been great in some games. Probably best described as an honest toiler. Can he be great all season? No i dont think so. Personally i think we need coverage at fullback now French is gone.
Someone mentioned us chasing Curtis Scott. He is a gun. He is origin, test rep potential. Can also play 1 through to 6. He is a must signing as well as RCG and a backrower.
We also have backs depth in Taka if he resigns, Parry, Salmon and Gennings. So Hoff for mine is surplus.
If we can get Curtis Scott then Mennings time might be up. I like Mennings but if it means landing Curtis Scott the call needs to be made as i dont think Mennings, Scott or Waqa Blake want to be playing reserve grade.
