So who are these “plenty of kids” ripping it up?

Of course there is Hass / Fifita but if there are plenty, there should be another 10 or so if not more!
Here's the Flegg-eligible players who played NRL this year, ranked by number of appearances (minimum 10 games):

27 Graham (Souths)
24 Fifita (Broncos)
24 Haas (Broncos)
23 Flegler (Broncos)
22 Xerri (Sharks)
21 Fotuaika (Titans)
15 Drown (Eels)
14 Lomax (Dragons)
13 Harris-Tavita (Warriors)
13 Verrills (Chooks)
12 Salmon (Eels)

Of those 11, there are 3 outside backs, 3 middle forwards, 2 halfbacks, 1 edge forward, 1 hooker and 1 of whatever Salmon is.

Last year these were the Flegg eligible players to play 10+ NRL games:

25 Murray (Souths)
25 Radley (Chooks)
24 Cotric (Raiders)
20 Papalii (Warriors)
20 Ponga (Knights)
16 Graham (Souths)
16 Fotuaika (Titans)
15 Brimson (Titans)
15 Doueihi (Souths)
15 Suli (Seagulls)
11 Fifita (Broncos)
10 Tuala (Cowboys)

Mahoney only played 9 games.

Anyway, there was a similar number of Flegg-eligible players appearing in 10 or more NRL games last year, and the positional breakdown is similar; 4 outside backs, 2 middle forwards, 2 edge forwards, 2 fullback/halves and 2 utilities.

Salmon is a bit like a fish out of water in the halves

I think Harris-Tavita will be a star if the Warriors don't f**k him up. Very impressive kid.

If we can hold onto Salmon for 2 or 3 more years and play him in the lower grades and the occasional NRL appearance without him getting poached(see what I did there) by another club or him getting disgruntled and wanting to leave, we will only then fully know what he is capable of.

He will have had more games against men and filled out and developed as a footballer himself. But to fully give him his best chance at success we need to settle on one position and stick to it. I would pick him as an edge backrower and give him a full season or two to see what he can turn into.

He is a quality player without setting the world on fire with any particular skill, but he offers a bit of everything. So let the boy settle into a style and grove of his own and see what happens ffs. I hope we don't cruel his chances of being a very good NRL player by using him as a utility all the time. Backrower for mine and put the work into him physically and coaching wise and you never know, we might see him swimming with the big fish when he matures.

Do you have the stats on how much each of them are ripping it up?

Yet Wighton has 5 nrl TA this year D Walker 6, and Salmon in 5 (C walker has 16) - and they have played more games this year and have a lot more experience.
Stats only show a general picture but given Calker also had 16 LBA it’s safe to say he’s a lot more of a playmaker than Salmon. But the discrepancy in games makes it impossible for stats to show who’s better at it. What if all of Salmon’s or Wightons came in a single blowout game?
Salmon right now doesn’t have the positioning or passing to be a half

Of course stats don’t show the full picture, and Salmon is no where near as good as Wighton / walker.

However just trying to show as a 20 year old 5/8 (not a half), he has already shown a fair bit of potential in that role in the NRL especially when compared to other traditional 5/8 style players. And when partnered with a dominant half.

Anyhow I reckon Salmon’s future is edge forward.

Geeze the rumours have dried up. A few weeks ago all the gossip was about:
  • Melbourne having to make room for Camillions.
  • Tigers trying to off load Mutalino, Packer and Grub.
  • Brisbane wanting to sign Croft but needing to release players to fit him in.
  • Ryan Matterson
  • Tyson Frizzell
  • Adam Chichton
  • Jai Arrow
  • David Fifita
Get on with it FFS !

Maybe player announcements might start after the GF. That way player commitments have been completed for all clubs?

  • Tyson Frizzell 19.2%
  • Adam Chichton 45%
  • Jai Arrow 30%
