Well, it's a fair enough comparison. Smith's lack of running didn't matter much in 2005. But once teams worked out that he would almost NEVER run, his whole game fell apart (as did his career). I think a hooker or half can maybe get away with it for a little while, but in the end it will make a very good player into an average one.

Exactly they just waited for his pass. He did also have a brilliant short kick that Luke Burt ate off a plate.

His career didn’t fall apart because of a lack of running.

Regularly using a running game even though it’s not very good, must be why Luke Brooks is the best half in the league.

Bipolar disorder.

I think he would have still been picked with bipolar disorder if he was good enough at the skills of running and tackling. He was bipolar in his debut year as well I am guessing.

I really liked him as a player even without the running game. Made up for that by having vision plus deadly passing and kicking skills. But he couldn't tackle and that was the big set back for him.

He wouldn't make it in today's game. He was exposed in his 2nd year.
No running game and no defense. Mortimer would go further if both debut in 2020

It is sad for the game that this is most likely true. The same phenomena of the current day game explains why Cleary will beat out Moses for state of origin even though Moses is a way more skilful player.

I don't know, mate - Moses' defensive ability these days is world-class.

Mitchell Moses is, nowadays, one of the most complete halves in the game.

And he'd look good in blue.

No. Moses defense has improved so much that he would be picked before Nathan. Unless Nathan picked up his own game. He was quite good in the opening 2 rounds. Burton is almost better right now.

Moses was also very erratic in attack and if game wasn't going to plan he would play stupid. We haven't been down by 10 points this season to see if he has fixed this.

I just want to see his composure when we are down by 10 points. This was the only area he seemed to become a little bit rattled.
At 25 he is now in peak years and will be for the next 6 season's.

I agree. He has been excellent defensively for 12 months now. I just think NSW will prefer Cleary because he is predictable and has an okay kicking game. Cleary to me is the most over rated player since Anasta.

Cleary has an exceptional kicking game. At 22 he can become a better player and this is why NSW chose him.He is ice cool and carries a game plan. Never gets flustered. These are great attributes.
I agree he has an average attacking game. He needs to work on that.

I wouldn't swap him for D.Brown or Moses cause they are superior talents imo. But I do think Nathan in 2 or 3 yrs will get better again.

My halves woukd be Moses and Pierce
