Behind? of course we are, we only took the “development club” direction in 2019. Panthers took it about 10 years ago!!

While its got nothing to do with Matt Cameron, it’s got to the with clubs board taking that direction. Cameron is just managing the process!! I reckon Joey / Issac and co are probably doing just as good now, but it needs time.

and look we also have 14’s, 15’s and 16’s development squads to:

And I guarantee not all clubs do this, dragons definitely don’t.

I don't believe we started that late. You could argue that our current processes started when Anthony Field took over and started with the 14s, which I believe those kids are now 22 so think Josh Curran, Oregon Kaufusi. Let's hope with Brendan Rogers now taking over he's taken the system of Field and continues to refine and develop those processes and not let it fall behind. Junior recruitment, retention, and development is a large aspect of building a squad.

"“Four years ago I was trying to produce young players to handle an NRL pre-season for a team that was on the fringe of the top eight, squeezing into maybe week two of the finals. Now it’s a whole level of expectation. The Roosters and Storm have been doing this for 10 years. It’s only the end of the beginning for us when you see what the Roosters and Storm have been able to do."

Roosters and Storm hey? What do they have in common that allows them to spend so much money over such a long period of time? Is it a coincidence that they both had Peter O'Sullivan working for them at one stage?

Where's Field now?

I watched the Super League GF this morning. Not too dissimilar to our GF. Some very good D with little attack. Nobody really stood out for mine. Maloney tried hard but age has caught up with him. Neither team dominated.

I think we are producing quality over quantity at the moment.
I hope Kafusi takes a leap next season. I'm still unsure how far his career will go. I am starting to think his ceiling may only be an NRL level prop. But it isn't to late in any way for him to break out and be a top shelf forward either. Look at Papali'i

He introduced an offload this year. I just wished he had more gametime. Knocking himself out doesn't help

For all his flaws, credit must be given to Arthur, in terms of developing forwards - he helped RCG get his form back, Papali'i, Paulo to get to Origin-level, Brown, taught Cartwright how to defend...

He even had Kane Evans playing decent footy.

The man can coach forwards.

Kaufusi turned 22 in August and had played 42 NRL games (he now has 44). Here's how many games the other props at top six teams had played by their 22nd birthday:

Big merkinGames by 22nd birthday
Asofa-Solomona53
Kaufusi42
Fisher-Harris38
Leniu36 (and won't be 22 until 2022)
Paseka26
Waerea-Hargreaves25
Tatola24
Welch19
Arrow18
Baker16
Bromwich15
Suluka-Fifita13
Leota12
Burgess9
Keppie5
Taupau4
Hau Tapuha3 (and won't be 22 until 2023)
Collins2
Liu2
Sipley2
Knight1
Taukeiaho1
De Luis0
Eisenhuth0
Kamikamica0
Mago0
Nicholls0
Schonig0
Thomas0

So I think Kaufusi is tracking okay. But I also don't expect other young props at our club (or any good club) to get much footy.

Great article. I hazard a guess that we are way behind them in the way we see and do our development.

Also wasn't Matt Cameron one of ours? Can't we get him back somehow?

The grass is always greener for you merkin. That's a very superficial stance, if you don't even know what's on your side of the fence.

The latest TCT podcast with Grima says we have 87 staff in junior development. As you say so many development squads and each player has a personal development plan and is continually monitored by the high performance crew.

I know it ain't a lap of honour and a week long party with a broken trophy in our hands merkin.

So what's on our side of the fence over the last 35 years?

Oh that's right a bunch of weeds, rotting worms and bucket loads of false hope that we have all had to swallow like a spoonful of gag invoking medicine. While their fence has been producing mangos, strawberries, peaches and probably served to them by a host of naked bevvies in a private Caligula style of forum and 3 titles for them to feast on.

Now as you were saying merkin?
