He's a great player, for sure.

But I don't see how $425,000 for a non-rep forward (which may change) is an insult.

He had a stellar season in 2021, but don't forget - he was ordinary at the Warriors.

How stupid would we look offering him $600,000 a season, only for him to regress to his pre-Parramatta form?

The art of negotiating contracts is a give and take affair - as a club, you always try to secure a bargain. If you can't, you go to plan B, then plan C.
Mate he repped for NZ by age 20, i'd have no doubt he'd be almost the first forward picked for them if we ever play rep footy again. I see what you are saying but the 425k offer for just two years made him going to the open market a very easy decision it now may cost is even more if we want to keep him.

We're in the box seat. We can offer Papali'i an upgrade for 2022. Other clubs can't, unless we agree to release the player.

And how many players sign extensions in July with more than a year to run on their contracts? They don't want to be stuck on unders, which is what a mid-year extension could mean.

Players sign in July when their contract is running out that year, not at the end of the following year.
Moses extended in May.

Playing the negotiation game is one thing, but if you low ball first up and another club comes in before you up your game with a substantially bigger offer you might get caught flat footed and lose out.

he would be our first forward picked, he’d be first NZ forward picked on form this year.

Offering him the lowest wage of any of our starting forwards is a joke.

Especially considering what guys like Lane,Brown or Matto are getting.

Yes, you have a point.

I'd be surprised if he left, though - while money does talk, it's clear as day that Arthur took Papali'i's game to a whole new level. I'm sure he would want to repay that faith - for a compromised price, that is.

Maybe we missed the memo and we are actually relocating to brisbane to be called the dolphins in 2023.

If the media have their way we wont have any players left by then all gone

Seriously questions need to be asked on how close to 50% of the squad are off-contract at the same time. I dont recall any other club being in the situation recently.

That is madness in this day and age. The media have been sniffing around for a month and everyday it seems another off-contract player is linked with leaving.

The club need to sort 80% of this out by start of round 1. Otherwise it will just be a distraction. Every media conference will be about contracts.

We did offer the upgrade and apparently he rejected that. So not feeling very box seat - even if weassume Papa is juat stringing Wests along to get us to increase the initial offer to counter.
He will have a price he is willing to accept and if he accepted our first offer it could mean we offered more than what he was happy with. What a waste. Do you even negotiation?

Bullshit, when the club deserves praise i'm always happy to give it.

But when it does something i don't agree with i wont apologise for being critical. When has Pou ever been critical about the club ever??? I know you love digging up posts i'm sure you'll find plenty from me giving the club a wrap.
I don't give the club much credit either. I think we're still not a top tier club, for example, but I'm excited that we appear to be on the up. Might it be just a flash in the pan? We've been mediocre for decades. 2005-2009 and 1997-2001 don't disprove that.

Yep. As soon as you start thinking a player is irreplaceable you end up in cap trouble. We have a good team and it isn't good because we've paid overs for merkins.

He's not a starting forward. We tried him out on the edge, and he started in the middle when RCG was out. But at full strength he comes off the bench for us.

If he wants to chase the cash he might well find himself at the Tigers like Utoikamanu did. And that's fine.
