Yep. Amazing how people were saying he’s replaceable and wouldn’t be worth the $$. Now they’ll be claiming it’s a master stroke. I see no reason why he can’t maintain the form he’s in for another 3 or so years. He’s hardly old
It's hardly a master stroke. It's a good indicator that we've lost one or more of the younger forwards.

I’m not saying there’s any guarantee of a premiership. I’m saying that until we achieve some degree of success (i.e making or winning a grand final) we should be continually building not getting worse. Is the salary designed to make week 2 finals teams that aren’t getting any further each year to regress?
You're missing the point. There's no continual building until winning a premiership or every club would be doing it. You can only build as strong as your resources allow, and for a club like ours that might mean a 20% chance of winning a premiership maybe two years in a row, with maybe a year or two either side of that at 10% chance. This kind of window might be followed by a year or two with 0% chance of winning. What all this means is that the team is never guaranteed to win a competition, even during a premiership window. It might be disappointing but it doesn't mean anyone failed. Just that we were out of luck. 20% chance of winning the premiership every ten years might be the best we can do. It's better than 10% or 15%, but whether you win or not you'll never know what your chances were.

I don't get the stgeorge mcgregor postings ..... its not like he is head coach .... he is basically an assistant assistant

there's plenty of coaches who can do a perfectly decent job as a complimentary part of the staff but just aren't up to the top job ...... eg big face

Agreed. That doesn’t change the fact that we had a salary cap advantage over Penrith by virtue of them paying for some of our players though. The other cap advantages you mentioned come from within and not other clubs.
Sure but you're saying we will have no more cap advantages and now we're going backwards after failing to win the comp. There's no proof we will have no more cap advantages. We might be getting RCG cheap for the next year or two by the simple fact that he will be at our club during his final two years as a highly paid bench forward playing 20 minutes each week.

Yeah. Some merkins make shit generals, but good soldiers, other merkins make good generals but shit soldiers.

Key is knowing which is which.

Marata was long odds on staying, and I love what he brings but unlike RCG I think he is very replaceable. I’d rather it was Lane leaving instead of him but he seems to be a favourite of the coach.
Lane is one of the few players contracted for 2023. He might even be on unders. That would make him any coach's favourite.

Some very commendable announcements by the club today.
Ennis is a footy brain. Very astute.
RCG extension i like. He can teach the young bucks coming through. This will only help the development of Kaufusi, Greig, Rodwell and Makatoa.
The statement put out by the club re: player movements was very professional.
ALAND extension another sign of stability.
Great work by the club and by the sounds of it more roster news next week or soon.

He has his good games but I reckon he’s soft, he was pretty shit against Penrith.
He tends to be one jogging back instead of running and busting his arse. He can actually be very good but its those little things and the inconsistencies in his output and performance which gives us supporters the sheets.

You'd be happy with Kearney back at the Eels as an assistant's assistant?

Why do you think that?

The way I see it is we will have to lose one or two of our top 17.
I still feel like Papa and Mahoney stay. Those are the two I care mostly about. Young, talented and on the rise.

Jnr,Marata,Matterson,Gutherson and Kafusi are the 5 guys who I feel we would like in the side but won't keep all of them. The other guys off contract won't worry most people.
Being that Papa and Mahoney require large upgrades along with Bryce who would of got a few more $$
We did lose MJ and Fergo which clears up some cash. But Pensini would of been given a reasonable deal. And Sivo got his pay day.

I think in an ideal situation Sivo wants out. On a reported 400k.

Of the other guys -
Jnr will be 29 at the end of 2022. Perhaps we could offer him 2yrs. But our pack would be all getting very old with N.Brown,Rcg and Jnr part of it come 2023. Dangerous. If he left so be it. I think Jnrs played his best footy.

Marata is handy but depends on his cost. Certainly isn't irreplaceable and a habit of getting suspended.

Gutherson is good but will cost 750k. If Russel looked the goods we may be able to save a lot of cash here.

Kafusi should be a priority signing. He won't cost to much and should be getting into his good years soon.

Matterson might be a handy extension. I'd say he will cost less then his current contract. But another concussion and its curtains.

There are pros and cons of players off contract. Mahoney,Kafusi and Papali'i would be my priorities. I don't see any positive losing any of them. But of the others I can see positives and negatives.

Great retention on RCG and I had the vibe that his manager was just fishing for a longer term deal when he rejected the option clause.

mahoney has to be the priority now and hopefully the club has Ennis giving him a call and chatting about what he can work on with him to take him up another level.

Paulo next in line after that for mine. I’m sure he’ll have plenty of suitors but I doubt any that will be top 4 competitors.

wondering what direction people would go if we had to make a choice between Gutho or Dyl on a long term deal. Dyl much younger, you could say more potential but it’s not coming along as fast as you’d like or expect from a half in attack, or Gutho who is largely dependable and will very rarely let you down and never shirks responsibility or involvement

Because it makes them cheaper per-year than a two or three (or one) year contract.
