Rumours and Stuff

That is an outlandish and ridiculous statement. Worse fullbacks have won premierships mate. Hell Penrith just did this last season.

The trick is to have a good enough overall team with power, speed and players that are extremely cohesive and effective in defense. We are/were lacking throughout the season in two of those areas. We are slowly adding a little extra speed(Penisini) and hopefully we are getting our defense sorted somewhat.

Defense is much more important then Guthos lack of explosiveness. I believe we need to be minimum in the top 3 defensive teams, if not number one, with our lack of X players or genuine speed demons out wide, to win it this coming season. Also Mahoney's running game is probably even more important then what Gutho lacks in explosive speed. I mean he does everything else so bloody well.

Bottom line is, Gutho is not our problem. He brings more then enough to the table in his overall game for us to win a premiership. When you boil it right down it is in three other areas that we could do with improvements. A more expansive attacking game, better defense and a little more speed are the areas that we should be focusing on. Mahoney's running game comes under the more expansive attacking game umbrella.

Tip of the week.

I would be sending all our outside backs and Dylbags to that speed coach so he can improve their initial take off acceleration. That is where most of our backs have been lacking over the last couple of seasons. If we could get our wingers and Dylbags that extra half a metre to one metre quicker then they currently are at take off, it would make a massive difference to both our defense and attack overall. For example, it would turn many of those half chances that we currently miss into successful full chances that lead to points that we don't currently get.
I agree with what you have said. I think we just need more variety in attack.
Like you said, more Reed with the Forwards stuff and other plays.

Why is the media carrying on like we are stalling on re-signing Hayne or Slater in their prime?

Seriously I’d take the captaincy off him. He isn’t going to get anywhere near what he or his manager thinks he’s worth. He should be leading by example and signing first and then encouraging his team mates to do the same.

Hang on Moses did that. I’m certain he is our best player and rightful captain.

Parramatta is playing another dangerous game of contract poker over the stalled negotiations with captain Clint Gutherson.
It can be revealed that Gutherson has now received what is said to be genuine interest from multiple rival NRL clubs, as the Parramatta Eels baulk at offering their inspirational skipper a new three-year deal.
While Gutherson’s longtime agent Sam Ayoub would not speculate what clubs he had spoken with directly about potentially signing the off-contract 27-year-old, it is understood as many as three rival clubs have already expressed interest.

“You would be insane to assume otherwise,” Ayoub said when questioned about outside interest.
Ayoub also revealed that he was in no rush to finalise deals for any of his three off contract Parramatta stars, also including in demand prop Junior Paulo and hooker Reed Mahoney.

Mahoney was videoed last week having dinner with Canterbury powerbroker Phil Gould and coach Trent Barrett, while Paulo is one of the game’s elite props who also won’t be short of offers.
Ayoub was clear that he was not trying to put any threats to the club about Gutherson either.
But he was not about to sit back and let it be assumed that other clubs were not just as interested in the highly respected fullback.
The Eels genuinely want to keep all three players and have tabled offers, but they are still a considerable way off coming to agreements over the terms of any of those deals.
In Gutherson’s case the sticking point is the length of the offer.
It’s understood the Eels have offered Gutherson a two-year extension worth around $1.5m, but Ayoub is pressing for a three-year term beyond Gutherson’s current deal which expires at the end of next season.

That would take Gutherson to the age of 31 when he next comes off contract at the end of 2025.
This is also the contract period when most elite players are rated in their prime footballing years, and so usually get rewarded with career-best deals.
The club last week attempted to get the process moving forward by placing a deadline of last Friday on all three of Ayoub’s clients.
But officials were then forced to back away from that ultimatum when Ayoub called their bluff and held his ground.
Asked if he wanted negotiations finalised before the players return for pre-season training at the end of the month, Ayoub said: “None of them are anxious to get anything sorted. They really aren’t. There is no pressure.”
He also denied he was upset that negotiations over Gutherson’s future appear to have dragged on, or that the two-year offer was disrespectful.
“No, I’m not upset,” Ayoub added.
“It is a process. I am not upset about anything. There is no rush.”
The Eels have been reluctant to enter into any public debate given the way negotiations with Gutherson went pear-shaped the last time, when he was initially lowballed with an embarrassing first-up offer.
But the fact that they again are seen to be treating their captain with a perceived lack of respect over the length of the deal suggests this could very easily get ugly if it is not sorted out sooner rather than later.
The Eels have already lost Marata Niukore who signed a lucrative deal with the Warriors last week, and they are also yet to finalise the future of several other players including Isaiah Papali’i, who is also in huge demand.
He can walk if he wants to. Was sick of the drawn out contract drama the last time, and I am sick of it again now. Good player, but there are other FB's around

I honestly do not believe Guth is worth $850k a season for 3 or 4 years let alone 1. Very good player but sorry not Elite.
If he and his manager could get what they are after from 3 other clubs then maybe they should take up the offer. Guth is very replaceable.
I don't believe there are any other clubs lining up for him. No other club needs a fullback and he is an unproven 5/8 so no-one is paying that coin.
Maybe ESL, French or Japanese rugby are his options for the money he's after.
Last time it was exhausting with it being dragged out in the media now its just ridiculous.
His manager is doing his job but Guth, Reed and Jnr need a new mgr. It's become a sh%t show again which makes it worse than last time

I’d say Redcliffe would be happy to have him. Again, it simply depends on the price.

Agree with those saying to take the captaincy off Gutherson next year - whether he re-signs or not. The way he's letting Ayoub do his drawn out deals through the media (again) is not a good example of leadership or loyalty to the club.

Let Moses and/or RCG be co-captains next year, and start planning for a Guth-less 2023?

Great post. Gutherson is starting to irritate me although I think he will eventually re-sign although I wouldn't be fussed of he left.

I suspect that you'd create more problems than you'd solve by doing that. The other players aren't the average mug punter. Replacing your captain while he's still at the club, simply because he hasn't signed a contract that he is not obliged to sign is hardly going motivate the other players, and could well induce unrest that does nothing but harm our performances on the field.
