we currently have no one waiting in the wings, there is no one of note in the market other than Brandon Smith who would command more $$ than Mahoney, and Api who it appears will stay at Penrith now Kikau is going and freed up money.

do we decide we will no longer have a rep quality 9 moving forward and go with a solid/reliable but not great hooker (similar to back in the Keating days) and use the funds we’re saving on a 9 to invest in other positions?

Starling, Kenny and Brailey are still off contract

and Fainu’s is off contract too and his case should be finalised this year.

Obviously none as good as Mahoney but there are some options

Starling and Fainu are all round better players thanks Mahoney. Mahoneys lack of running the ball makes him predictable in attack.

Yeah I think the hype around Rheed is a tad OTT. He learnt this year to run from the ruck and has a kick, but 700k ? Are good hookers that rare ?

Well we can't have it both ways. We can't all sit back and applaud and pump up his tyres when he gets selected for Origin (subsequently ruled out because of injury), but then downplay his abilities when it comes time to negotiate a new contract. 600-700K would be bare minimum for an Origin-calibre spine player.

Either we rate him and have faith in him that he will continue to improve and consolidate his status as a rep player and pay him accordingly or we turf him and go looking for a new hooker ASAP.

When is the last time we had 2 spine players who were with us for more than 7 years and constants in our FG team?
Moses and Gutho will both be with us during their peak years and if we manage to lock in Mahoney for another 2 years (23 & 24) he will also be more than 7 years in FG.

I reckon that's how you build a successful squad.
