Look this might be a little out of the box, but I would make a massive play for Joseph Suaalii from the Roosters. He is on the market after this year having a Player Options in his favour from 2023 onwards. He is an out and out superstar waiting to happen and a future fullback that will be stuck behind Tedesco for at least 3-5 years from now.
He is best mates with Penisini and we don't have a game breaking superstar like 99% of all the premiership sides tend to do. That game breaker is our missing ingredient at the moment and has been since our Semi and Hayne days. We will struggle against the best teams until we can get a player that can consistently turn a game at the blink of and eye.
We can offer Suaalii the fullback position in a season or two at most or even immediately if that were the only way we could persuade him to come across. Would it piss off our current captain? Sure might do, but who gives a toss. Look what the Roosters did with Pearce and Cronk. They make the tough decisions and win premierships. Remember, Cronk was a gamble too when he came to the Roosters. He was on the decline and not as affective as he had once been, but they took the punt and it worked for 2 premierships trophies.
What we have here is a similar situation but in reverse. Suaalii is basically unproven at NRL level and we would be willing to move a seasoned performer either to a different position or punt him all together to accommodate the rookie. I say we take a very calculated gamble and do it. We have to find an X factor. Suaalii is that and in 2 or 3 years he could be the next Turbo. We have nothing like him at our club with the same type of potential and won't anytime soon. The Roosters have so many match winners. They couldn't possibly compete if we offered Suaalii around $1m.
Remember, he wouldn't be getting a $1m to go to a sh*t club, but to move to another top 4-6 roster and play with one of his best mates and move much closer to family and friends. It is more then doable if we made the right moves and money offer. It is just a matter of if our club can think big or just keep going along as it always has and hope that these current quality but mostly average backs can do the job.
Think about it.
1. Suaalii
2. Dunster
3. Penisini
4. Blake
5. Russell
6. Brown
7. Moses
Has a much more lethal look about it.
