Very pleased to hear Parra are interested in signing Herbie Farnworth according to ABC Grandstand. Dolphins considered favourite's to sign him but Parra in calculations. Maybe Waqa stays wing long-term....
Herbie the love bug goes pretty good. The worry is he is a Pom, our record with them aren't the best.

Unsure if this excites me. It suggests we don't rate what backs we do have or many young kids coming thru.
Let's do the maths.

Gutherson is our fullback for atleast 3 more seasons
Penisini and Blake are classy players.

It leaves 2 spots. We still have Sivo,Simmonson,Dunster and Russel.
I feel like going for Herbie means they don't rate Laizou,Sivo,Dunster,Simmonson and want better options.

If our club did rate Simmonson and Russel and long term NRL options then guys like Haze are great back ups.
Herbie is a great player but it means a guy like Simmonson or Russel plays NSW cup.

How is it distinguished from the other middle forwards though? By the jersey number? By his position at scrums? Probably the only reliable indicator of who is playing lock as opposed to prop is where he stands when receiving a kickoff or dropout. Otherwise he defends in the middle four (with props and hooker) and he attacks in the middle. Does he play more minutes than the props? Does he make more runs per minute or fewer? Does he throw more passes per run or fewer? These days it's just 8/10/13 in the middle and they tend to play three different roles (i.e. they play to their strengths). There's no good reason to call one of them the lock other than out of tradition based on jersey numbers.

I'm not sure if we will retain Sivo past his current deal.

Okay.
That didn't start a trend (edit: actually it is more than a trend as all 9s play lock in attack now) and was not likely an innovation in response to a rule change.

I recall Kevin Campion played a bit of hooker, and then moved into lock, once the bench hooker came on.

It's been going on for a while.

What other thing does a lock do? It’s not a position except for at the scrum.

It's just a (sometimes smaller) middle forward now, who plays longer minutes than the props. But that was inevitable once the game switched to left and right centres, and left and right edge forwards. Back in the day the lock was typically quite a bit smaller than the props and did a lot of cover defense.
