you seem to be missing the point entirely as your post has nothing to do with what he said
The Cows have all their spine players bar Thurston signed up, i'd say Thurston is the top priority. So there was no way that could offer the sort of coin Ponga could of gotten as a spine player somewhere else. They have arguably the best spine in the comp, they were never a chance to keep Ponga and nor should they. Coote re-signing cost them Ponga, think they will end up ruing that call.

Thats what's supposed to happen with a salary cap, the top club lose players they want to keep. Boo hoo for the Cowboys, they kept Coote so they had no right to keep Ponga.

Lol. Mate, do you understand there is no cap clarity for the coming years?

I understand the cap is designed to spread the talent across all teams, but how can club negotiate with players, if they don't know what the cap will be??

The NRL is currently run by a bunch of clowns.

Of course they were no chance of signing him, they have no idea what the cap will be in 2018.

I wont argue with you there, but see my reply El D. They signed Coote on good money, there should be no way they get to keep Ponga as well.

They have arguably the best spine in the comp, why would they be then able to then keep the best young spine player in the NRL as well???

Ultimately it's between the club and the player. Plenty of players are holding out to know what the cap will be while others are making a call and getting on with life.

Did you know we already have over half a dozen players signed up for 2019, including three of our best? None of them knew what the cap would be either. If players hold out too long they run the risk of clubs being left with no cap space for them. That happened to Benji Marshall already this year.

Thurston isn't going to be around forever and if they had some cap clarity they could sign Pnga up and see his salary increase in the later years of it

Thurston has what 3 more seasons??? Maybe Ponga wasn't happy to wait??? as i said Coote's re-signing cost them Ponga and rightly so iMO. Only the Bronco' seem to get away with stock piling talent.

While it's not ideal, it's not difficult. You negotiate a deal that is for a 2017 fixed salary, and and a 2018 and beyond salary that is a fixed amount plus a proportion of the cap increase (or similar contingent terms). This is far from the first time that the salary cap 18 months out has been uncertain. Agents are just doing their job....angling for the best deal they can get their player.

No doubt those 3 players we have signed up in 2019, have clauses in their contracts allowing for any rise in the salary cap.

The NRL should be transparent with clubs and shed light on their plans for the cap. It probably cost a team like the cowboys signing a future star ;).

It hasn't stopped them signing 14 players for 2018, including seven members of their premiership winning side, plus Coen Hess.

Maybe a potential future star will be the one forced out.

If maybe they knew what they had to play with, they may of signed ponga back up in September or October. I'm sure waiting till November won't help their cau... oh wait!
