Of course it's a lot of money for a rookie. But got to remember they are looking for a spine player. You could have several quality players but without any decent spine players you are stuffed.

I think Brown is doing a decent job, they have blooded a lot of juniors and in 2-3 years they will probably get some value in them which will offset the big money for Ponga.
And obviously whatever he is worth right now as an 18 year old with two NRL games (both sudden death finals) under his belt, isn't so relevant to this big contract he's signed. It is based on what the Knights think he will be worth from 2018 to 2022. By the final year of this contract he will be turning 24, will probably have played 100+ games, and the salary cap (if following the historic cap growth trend) will be about $11M. If so the mean salary by then would be over $400k. The top players in the game would be on over $1.5M under the cap. $600k would be peanuts for a genuine game breaker.

He might've only played two games but I've seen enough of Ponga to think he's shown more than Bevan French, who is one of the most exciting youngsters in the game. Ponga has better footwork and strength, and is two years younger.

Oh no ! WTF ?

TRIPLE M has announced the cancellation of its popular Saturday morning Dead Set Legends program, prompting a wave of angry reaction from listeners.

The station today announced the 9am weekend sporting fix, hosted by Ray Warren, Dan Ginnane and Richard Freedman, would end after 19 years on the air. The last show will broadcast in a fortnight’s time.

Weekday drive show The Rush Hour will be rebranded Dead Set Legends under the shakeup.

Triple M recently announced Aussie comics Roy Slaven and HG Nelson will host a national Saturday morning show in 2017 called The Sporting Probe with Roy & HG. The duo hosted a daily show during this year’s Rio Olympics before making a permanent return.

“Rampaging Roy Slaven was recently acknowledged by the AFL and Racing Victoria as Australia’s number one prober,” Nelson said.

“To have Roy back on air seeing gaping holes that need vigorous probing completes a Triple M line up for 2017 that has its hoof on the till of ratings success. I am simply over the super moon.”

“Having Roy & HG back at Triple M is like having Sheeds back at Essendon, Wayne Bennett back at the Broncos or Bob Simpson back with the First XI,” added Triple M head of content Mike Fitzpatrick. “It just makes sense.”

It’s understood the station is keen to develop a sports-themed show to lead in to The Sporting Probe, which will run from 10am to noon, and is keen to continue to work with Warren, Ginnane and Freedman in some capacity. “We’re hoping all the boys will remain a part of the Triple M family in 2017,” a Triple M spokesperson said.

It follows Warren’s announcement he may have called his last NRL Grand Final for Channel Nine. Known as the voice of rugby league, Warren celebrated his 50th season as a commentator in 2016.

But to say today’s announcement was received poorly is an understatement.

The best thing is that Ray Warren is on his way out.
The next best thing is that Roy and HG should have done this gig years ago.
Dan Ginnane is ok. I might not agree with him all the time, but that's cool.
This is a great announcement.

Always listen to the Legends podcast. Also the Rush Hour which will be rebranded as DSL Quite confusing. Roy and HG are good. I guess the ratings are not what they use to be.

I think when Gower is in the side it always brings a bit of "footy" to the team
Like Wicks and the GuthBus, I get the impression Gower is a great team man and great for morale. I think he has a footy players brain in a lumbering forwards body. Could actually see him making a decent coach downtown track....

Club bosses will be furious with NRL over the Knights offer to Kalyn Ponga

I AM thinking rugby league kingpins John Grant and Todd Greenberg will not be getting a friendly welcome home from the NRL club bosses when they return from the Four Nations final.

More likely they will be met with placards asking: “What the #$%^ is going on?’’

Newcastle’s offer of $3.5 million to snare Cowboys’ teenager Kalyn Ponga after a grand total of two games has to be one of the most disruptive moves in the game’s history.

Forget about the pressure it has put the kid under. That’s a matter for him, his family and his bank manager to mull over.

Forget, too, that the Knights are the worst-performed team in the competition and unless they can also buy some muscle and nous to give him support, Ponga is going to spend five years picking lumps of turf out of his teeth. That’s a matter for him, his family and his dentist.

Forget that two-game veteran Ponga would be earning more than established players at the Knights, including Origin star Dane Gagai. That’s a matter for him, the players and the dressingroom.

And you can even forget that the Knights could be making the biggest financial faux pas since their former owner Nathan Tinkler thought it would be a good idea to go into the horse racing business. That’s a matter for them, their fans and their financial backers.

Just who are their financial backers, you may ask? The NRL of course.

Since Tinkler walked away the Knights have been under the control of the NRL.

So when we say Newcastle are throwing $3.5 million at an untried kid in the hope he will lead them out of the wilderness, we are really saying the NRL is.

Which must make the Cowboys absolutely ecstatic. Here they are, after years of struggle, finally breathing a bit of clean air at the top of the pile, and the organisation they work for is pulling the rug out from under them.

It is not only the Cowboys who will be feeling that. The Queensland and Federal governments will be less than overjoyed as well.

They have committed $240 million to build a stadium as part of a major redevelopment of the Townsville city area, with the Cowboys and NRL coming up with $10 million.

By the time the first game is played there Johnathan Thurston will probably have hung up the boots, along with most of the 2015 premiership-winning team.

Ponga, the brightest star on the Cowboys’ books would be seen as a key attraction in getting paying customers through the gates. He might still be doing that, but in Newcastle.

But the thing that will really be sending the other clubs into a spin is the fact that this offer will throw the entire player market upside down.

If Ponga is worth $700,000 a season at the age of 18, what does that make Thurston, Anthony Milford, Shaun Johnson, Darius Boyd or any of the other 250 established players worth on the open market?

More to the point, what can the management of off-contract Valentine Holmes ask?

After all, he is still only 21, has played almost 60 NRL games, has won a premiership and represented Australia. And what can the clubs afford to pay? The simple answer is, they don’t know.

In yet another twist to an already murky scenario, the NRL has yet to announce the salary cap for 2018 and beyond.

The Cowboys, along with every other club, are fighting with two hands tied behind their backs.

They can’t open the chequebooks to keep their players because they don’t know how much money they have to spend.

Who said rugby league was a game played on a level playing field?

lol the poor Cowboys, oh what will they do???

Fancy allowing the worst club in the comp to pay overs for the best young talent in the game??? It's not fair we need to keep the strong clubs up the top who cares about the struggling ones. What a load of dribble, Coleman should stick to writing about Yawnion too bad for him writing about Yawnion doesn't pay any bills in this country.

What a f**kwit. The only time I read the Sunday Mail is if I am in desperate need of a nugget.

Thanks Mike, you have sorted me out this morning. If anyone needs me I'll be spray painting the bowl.
