Begrudge them their last payday - no.
Begrudge them their last BIG payday - for sure.
And I don't expect them to accept peanuts for their last contract years, just recognise that the loyalty they are asking for from the club(s) comes at a cost to them as well.

Before this proposal imagine if Bellamy says to Cronk, "your last contract is going to be $500k +$400k +$300k because in 3 years time you will be 36 and probably won't be playing first grade as much." Cronk says "no way, I am on $600k now and I want that for the last 3 years, it is my last chance to earn".
If St. George then stepped in and offer him 3 years @ $550k per year he would probably take it.

In the new scenario, Melbourne can just cough up the $600k he wants (cause they are loyal) and put near to nothing on the Cap so he stays 'loyal" to them. Where was Cronk's loyalty again - that's right, in his wallet.
What you've left out is the genuine possibility that The player (eg. Cronk) has stayed for less during previous negotiations when he was at his highest value. This is just rewards

I don't get why the article/RLPA make a big deal out of Corey Parker being "forced" to retire - he wasn't.

He just didn't get an offer for his final contract to match the level he'd been used to, and didn't want to uproot from his one team town to chase another offer. He made a choice in a situation that faces all players at a certain stage.

Why should the salary cap be changed just to accommodate extra pay for older players who think they deserve a final pay day to be their highest valued contract, and can't be arsed to test the market to secure it?

??? So what. That's a choice that might have been made....or might not have been made. Who knows? the long standing player might have been collecting overs for seasons b/c the club are scared of a fan backlash if they let the bloke go. If a player wants to sign for less money to stay at a club, that's their choice. But you shouldn't encourage a system whereby teams can effectively get around the cap by have a nod and a wink agreement that we'll 'sort you out in the next contract when you are cap exempt'.

My problem with the RLPA proposal is that it does not obviously relate to either of the stated aims of the salary cap: 1) to constrain total expenditure and 2) to distribute talent. In practice, it's a salary cap free kick for successful teams (as they are the ones most likely to have 10 year+ veterans).

I don't actually think it gives the players any special bargaining power....coz the player's next best option is whatever some other club will pay and that doesn't change.

Yep. Let market value dictacte the worth. Same system as the rest of us f**kers work under.

It'll never happen, but any cap discounts should be applied to clubs who have nurtured players through to 1st grade over say, 3-4 years.

I would be happy with a system that considered giving clubs cap relief of say, $50k per player that has been at the club for at least 5 years and is now in their first Top 25 contract. Maximum of $500k (10 players) and to be given back to those 10 players.

Pou he is wearing 13 in those wrestling drills. He is also pictures in the latest photos. For some reason when I saw schoolboy I thought he'd be a runt but he looked plenty strong enough for a half physically. I don't think he will be long in 21's before they want to test him against men in Wenty.

That isn't Blair, it's Jack Morris the under 20's back rower graduating to the NRL squad.

As usual you're too stupid to try and twist my words. This is about getting more money into the hands of players - any increase in the cap, or anything exempt from the cap not only goes into the hands of the receiving players, but frees up cap space for other players. So of course the NRLPA aren't wrong - their job is to get more money out of whoever will pay.

But they're wrong to go whinging about loyalty. That's just a smokescreen to hide the fact that this is about greed. I've got no problem with it but plenty of fans do.

seriously Pou ?

no comeback so you resort to insults. that's not like you

At least you have managed to work out that the NRLPA work for the players, maybe that's where they got their name from

If that is the way you want the system to be, then fine. It just is quite unusual. Development and retention of junior talent should (imo) be promoted.

Comea at a cost to the club to bring in young kids from the country and develop them. i imagine most clubs would be happy to pay over the cap to keep.

Not sure it stops talent distribution. rather it rewards talent identification and good management doesnt it?

Maybe it needs a draft to make it more equitable though.... yikes!

Can our under 20's win it next season? Thinking of slapping a $50 on. Our halves should be one of the better pairings and sounds like we will have to very good centres. 40/20?

Very Solid looking Kid. Good size and apparently great attitude.

Yeah he looks to have put on some muscle in the off-season. Great attitude, mainly going from the couple of times I've spoken to him he's really relaxed and enjoys his footy. I think I said this elsewhere on here but having him paired up with both Scott and Mannah in the wrestling training is the perfect fit for him. He won't be a superstar by any means but he has the potential to win a lot of rucks for us.
