Time will tell. After 2021 I was gutted we lost him. I mean he was maybe our best spine player or very close to Moses and Guth.
After 2022 I almost felt sides worked him out a little. And I don't like those long 25mtr passes that Joey blows his nuts over. To much air time and defense just has to much time and hits a flat footed playmaker or outside back or 2nd rower.
I reckon the quick short passes are 10x more effective.

if he stays fit I think he’ll be great at the dogs. Might see him running some more too.

I'm shocked we don't have peter Sterling on as a consultant. One of the sharpest analysts in the game. He's bang on about how we don't shift the ball enough coming out of our own end.

I think he’s just happy to pop in to the dressing room from time to time.

Did you know we have tried ?

21 November, 2021

The Parramatta Eels have reportedly began discussions with Peter Sterling to return to the club in a part-time role.

Sterling, who retired from media work at the end of the 2021 season with the Nine Network - where he has been for decades - has no new role lined up.

He made it clear some months ago that he was simply retiring, with a wish to travel and spend more time with his family following his media commitments coming to a close.

That statement from Sterling followed speculation he had been pushed out of the Nine Network to make way for a younger crop of commentators and experts.

Sterling however has been widely regarded as one of the best analysts in the game for many years, with the 61-year-old likely to leave a hole in Channel 9s coverage of the NRL.

His media role followed a career of 264 games - 228 of those for the Eels and the other 36 for Hull FC in England in the mid-1980s. A part of the successful Parramatta team of the 1970s and 1980s, Sterling is a club legend who also made 13 appearances for New South Wales and 18 for Australia.

The Daily Telegraph are now reporting there is a fresh push from senior Parramatta figures to employ Sterling in a part-time recruitment and retention role.

Well, lads as far as recruiting goes has anyone heard much? My ends have been quiet. As far as recruiting goes I'd be pissing off N.Brown, Cartwright, and Blake surely clubs would pick up any of them. As far as bringing people in I'd be trying to get Niu, Allen, Taupau, Asi and J.Cook. Cook as a backup to Hodgson on the bench, Allen for Waqa on the wing, and Niu in for Opacic. I really like Niu and Allen both are good at creating yardage and Allen is very safe under the highball. Also, they can both play fullback so that's another added bonus. Asi would be more of a depth signing to cover the halves and centers I think he's talented and I don't think many clubs are interested in him. Niu and Allen are must-buys for us I think though.
A backline of:
1. Gutherson 2. Sivo 3. Niu 4. Penisini 5. Allen
is much improved on what we have last year and adds origin experience with Allen. Niu would flourish in our system. Get it done.

I think Niu is too undersized to play centre and Allen is too slow. Allen had one good origin series in the bubble and couldn’t even crack the mediocre Bulldogs side this season. A lot can happen in 2 years. Nathan Brown played in the origin side against Corey Allan and we’re trying to get rid of him.

I think he was joking. He has to be. He’s having us on.

Nah mate why would I joke both are quality? Niu is a big bloke he can't be too undersized he's the same build as Penisini. Niu is 177cm and Penisini is 180cm and Niu weighs 94kg and Penisni is 98kg both are stocky and powerful. As for Allen I just like him his not slow at all watch these highlights. Both Niu and Allen are young and have potential at worse Allen can be a good back up 1 for us.

So, appears next year we have no back up half-back, no backup hooker, and no decent right wing options. I do think Simmondson might be a pretty decent attacking centre (and back up fullback).
Imo, we need to buy a good winger, a good hooker, and a decent half-back option. And, honestly, don't let Blake anywhere near first grade ever again.

I know the lefties have gone a bit loony of late but let's try to keep politics out of team selections.

Agree.

Although the club would say we have Jake as a back up half-back, and Mitch Rein on the books as a backup hooker. I'd have Simonsson in the centres with Penisini, but that's not a combo that's going to strike much fear into our opposition (in attack or defence).

With Blake not first choice in either backlien position, the other wing spot is open to Dunster or Russell to make a go of in 2023 - but so far we seem a weaker/weakened squad especially if we end up with a player or two out through injury.

I think Niu could turn into a fantastic player in the right system and with some consistency in first grade. I’d be happy to see the club make enquiries after Nov 1.

Corey Allen is a weird one. A couple of years ago I’d have taken him in a heartbeat. I don’t watch dogs cup games so not sure if he has digressed massively as a player to not crack the dogs first team, or if maybe Gus just stamped his papers for some reason

We have the perfect back up half
